Back-plunger DTI
Watching YouTube videos, I see the occasional use of a DTI with the plunger at the back, coaxial with the pointer.
This arrangement would be very convenient in some situations, but rarely seen in Australia.
Not in any of the popular local catalogs.
Mick Moyle in Sydney has quite a collection of old instrumentation, but has not seen one for many years,
Anyone using them ?
Associated with this is the use of an attachment that clamps to a regular DTI stem to detect movement at right angles.
I could make one of these, but it would require some delicate machining.
Perhaps someone can give me a hint on where to get one locally.
Just curious,
Keep well,
John.

The starrett 196b should be available somewhere in australia for sure that's the whole back plunge kit. Mitutoyo also make one but I don't think it's a whole kit.
I think I have a spare ID attachment thing I'll have a look

Hi Guys,
Shedhappens did a wonderful job of sorting out a rear probe Kafer Indicator.

Thanks for the link to the Kafer, I missed it.
That is the sort of thing that sparked my curiosity.

I picked up a few from ebay probably 12 years ago. Some guy must have gone to a auction and picked up a heap of indicators and accessories as he's eBay listing where flooded with them at the time and they all went for $40 or less with postage, the attachments for even cheaper.
Just keep an eye on eBay for them, they do come up but I haven't looked for years because I have to many indicators.
Some years ago I think it was Stuart took out the most indicators at around 40 odd I think it was.Using Tapatalk

Mitutoyo also did a Back plunger dial indicator kit like the Starrett.
I believe the other item you are asking about is a Starrett 671 Universal Attachment.

I don't recall ever seeing one locally. Though I guess a special order would get you one.
I have both, they don't get used often, I find DTI's* do pretty much the same thing. But its nice to have options
*as apposed to dial indicators
Oh I remember when I only had 40 . But Matthew_g beat me with "about 70", if he stopped shopping I might give him a run for his money these days lol
