Good suggestion, I hadn't thought of reversing it like that I'll try it tonight...........simple. The runout in the taper varies depending on the depth where it's measured so seems there is is angular misalignment, like it is bent. With a skewed socket, I expect to find a bend in the outer spindle but we shall see.

Update: I checked the spindle outer between chuck and tailstock centre and it looks pretty straight. This lead me to discover that my 4jaw is not holding the spindle straight. Apparently this that is not unusual especially for older/used chucks. Anyway, looks like I'll need to use a steady and 4jaw to get it running as straight as possible. Having the steady on the bed makes setup/measuring at bit trickier though.

For anyone interested, I re-bored the MT3 socket with the setup shown in the picture. First put the spindle in the 4jaw and trued it where the bottom taper bearing sits. Then I installed the steady at that point carefully to not disturb the setting. Then loosened the chuck, installed a ring of copper so the jaws wouldn't introduce skew and trued the chuck end. Results were pretty good, basically 0 runout in the spindle, all the remaining run-out is in the chuck + arbor. I didn't get the taper angle perfect but it seems close enough. I'm happy with it now since I don't have the work piece dancing around with large drill bits.

That's good news that you've fixed it to your satisfaction, it feels good to have a winner.

Fantastic you got a result. Well done. Not sure if it is me, but there is no pic and the attachment link says it is invalid.

I'm really too late to this thread, but for anyone interested Tom Lipton has a series of about 4 videos on setting up to cut a short taper, and he actually references the quill a drill press. It is worth anyones time in looking over the videos, let alone those of us short on machining experience, so here is the link to the first in the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfrRFCzGNTw. Plenty to learn even if you do have your drill performing as you want. Cheers,

Strange, the picture was working. Now it's not working for me either. I'll insert it again
