Tool & Cutter Grinding
Having recently purchased a bulk lot of end mills and horizontal mill cutters, i have a need to re-grind and touch them up. Is this the sole domain of the T&C Grinding machine or can this be achieved on a surface grinder somehow?
I don't want to buy a new machine if I don't need it (I have a surface grinder) but I would like the ability to keep my tools sharp and reduce the need to buy new ones.

Tool and cutter grinding
Hi Mk1.
Tool and cutter grinding is half attachments and half know how. The third half is experience.
There are lots of attachments available to buy or build. A good item is the Tinker, available in plans from Guy Lataurd. He has a youtube channel as That Lazy Machinist.
The bedroom workshop is a web site for a Clarkson fan and has lots of pics.
Ebay for a Norton book Tool Room Grinding. Also search for Cincinatti No 2 grinder manual.
Regards

I picked up a Norton book Tool Room Grinding book for $0.55 US on Ebay, cost me $14.80 to post it. A very good read, describes the best wheel for a particular job, gives recommended angles etc for grinding various tools. It mainly describes the use of the Norton T&C Grinder.
I can add your name to the end of the list if you like.

I asked at a saw service a while ago about sharpening horizontal mill cutters, as he had one in his display cabinet. He said they charge by the hour and it usually works out around $60 per cutter. I have a few dozen of them in varying condition. I made a jig for sharpening them on the surface grinder, it is time consuming but produces a good result, still needs some fine-tuning of the gadget to be really happy with it. Have one of the endmill sharpening gizmos for the SG too but haven't used it much yet.

Tool and cuter work
Hello from BC again.
One big problem with tool grinding on the SG is you loose 2 axis of work. The tilt and swivel. Like my Clarkson grinder all angles are off the table and work head. At least the clarkson has a top table that swivels on the main table. A tru universal T & C grinder has 3 axis on the wheel head, tilt swivel and height, 2 on the table, 3 on the workhead. Add table positioning like on the Rong Fu and life is a lot easier. The Clarkson came with a collection of cross drilled blocks with clamp screws coupled to straight and bent rods 3/8" dia. These can be used to position the index finger, then stand back and see how to simplify the setup.

The Cinci manual is in a few read only libraries for free.

Tool and cutter work
SAM_0646.jpgSAM_0647.jpgSAM_0648.jpgSAM_0649.jpgSAM_0650.jpg Hi from BC's shed.
For tool and cutter work you need work holding and indexing.
The first 2 pics show part of my indexing collection. With the home made collection of brackets and rods an indexing finger can be placed where you want it. With luck a more rigid indexer will be able to replace it to grind the work.
Pic 3 is a simple work head. The clearance angle on the cutter is set by wheel height above or below center.
Last 2 pics have the Clarkson work head with a ER32 collet chuck and 25mm plain shank. The indexing collars at the rear are home built and 6 tooth indexing is off the collet nut. The body of this head is tapped to take the simple indexer in pic 1 hard left.
The accuracy of this tooling doesn't have to be too flash as the setup can compensate. You set the tool with a clino. Sliding bush running clearance must be very good to prevent chatter.
Clarkson didn't supply the workhead with a swivel base as the top table swivels.
Couple this with a sliding table and good bench grinder to make sparks.
It is a big effort to start tool grinding but you get rewarded with good tools.
Have a good weekend.

I got a copy of the Cincinnati No2 book and Norton book the other day! Interesting stuff.

That (John) Stevenson fixture is a very useful attachment to a surface grinder! It will do the primary and secondary angles of end mills nicely. But you need a T&C grinder to do the flutes....

You could potentially make something to grind the flutes if you want a project; an ER32 tool holder mounted in a bearing for rotation and running on linear rails with a tracer pin to follow the inside of another flute.

I cam across the Powermax Website recently whilst looking for a a website that sell power hacksaw blades in Australia. It seems that they offer a sharpening service https://powermaxgroup.com.au/ . Also Sutton Tools offer a regrinding service as well https://suttontools.com/services/regrinding-services/ . I have no idea what either of the company's charge for tool sharpening.
