Stuck keyless chuck
I'm sure I've seen this question asked before but I can't find it with a search. I can't undo my keyless chuck - it has overtightened.
What I did find while searching was, many moons ago member Ueee, saying never use a hole saw in a keyless chuck - guess what I did.
I've done it before and never had a problem but this time it's stuck tight.
Anyone got a removal method that's worked for them.
Cheers
John

Don't panick - problem solved
I went back to the shed and found a way to stop the drill press spindle from turning - a wedge from a piece of wood - and with both hands on the chuck it came free.
Cheers

Crude but effective.

Hi John, Guys,
That is one reason that I don't like keyless drill chucks ! Do anything to cause the jaws to twist tends to lock them up.Best Regards:

Two rubber strap wrenches works a treat. All my chucks have holes that fit a standard ER32 collet chuck key so I only need one rubber strap wrench. I keep an ER32 key attached to my DP on a length of SS cable as I can usually use one of these and a hand to get them undone.

+1 for strap wrenches... I had no end of trouble with keyless chucks and my hands not being strong enough to get the bits back out, enough to send me back to keyed chucks as I can more easily get leverage on the chuck keys.

i normally hold the tang in the vice and use a chain whip on the body. It happens quite often at work, i haven't managed to train the boilermakers, not to use holesaws in the keyless chucks.

I cannot remember the last time I used a keyed chuck.
Interesting mentioning strap wrenches. I have been pulling some bits and pieces out of my work boxes that have been sitting on the garage floor for the last 18 months.
My two oil filter straps were ones I pulled out and hung on the wall for latter use. I did not even think of using them for the rare times the chucks jam even though I have used at work for similar things.
I am just becoming to brutal in my old age.

A friend decided to use my Albrecht chuck with a 4" holesaw, mushroomed and cracked one of the components - of course this one was modular with the arbor and non-repairable. Brings a tear to the eye the replacement cost!

We have a keyless chuck at work on a DP, the bottom knurled ring tightens the jaws onto the drill bit, while the top knurled ring locks the bottom. One of the neanderthals there, tightens them both up so tight, that BTS's tool are required.
To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
