Question What kind of and how much oil should I use for an old milling machine?

    G'Day guys,
my new-old milling machine is out of oil and I don't know which one is most suitable.
I don't have a manual for it, so I also don't know how much can fit inside...

I found recommendations to use hydraulic oils like "Shell Tellus 46" (46?), but there are quite a lot of different versions (S2MX, S2VX, S2VA, S2MA, S3M, S3V, S4ME, S4VX) and there might also be another brand to consider equaly.

My mill is placed in a shed. So it might get very cold in the winter...
IMG_20200326_164246_cut.jpg It's an old 1989' HWACHEON WMTH1300 and about 2.5m (8 feet if you prefer) in every direction.
Would be nice if the cold wasn't a dealbreaker for the oil. I will definitely not use it everyday and probably a lot less in winter, tho.
I guess the "M"-versions of the Tellus-oils aren't suitable due to the temperature range..?

Please give me your best guesses

Hi Baron, thanks for the german link

I tried to contact them some month ago already, but got no reply whatsoever.
Just tried to contact them again, anyway... Maybe they were busy with all the Corona stuff going on.

    For the meantime:
Do you have a general suggestion about the usual type of oil or a guess of roughly how much of the oil can fit inside such a machine?
Like the Shell oil is getting sold in buckets of 20 liter, a barrel of 209 liters or 1000 liters. Obviously 209 liters is a lot, but how many buckets may I probably need?

What about the linear slides oil?
I guess that needs some refresh, too

just google bridgeport mill manual...same same but different machine. there are plenty on the net but some of the greases and oils aint available in oz in smaller quanitties. Just ring oil supplier oif your choice and they will tell you an alternative.

or even google it as there are a lot of charts out there with alternative manufacturers of say Mobil etc.

I use caltex way oil, shell Gadus V2 grease for top gear box. and good oil for oiling points.

What I usually use is a UNIVERSAL TRACTOR TRANSMISSION OIL also known as UTTO in some circles.

Warmer climate and where the machine sees a lot of continuous use I use old catpiler dozed spec oil which is w30

Common utto is a 10w 30 great for cooler climates and machines on short cycle times and is the cheapest because just about any brand of modern tractor uses one version or another of it.

Tractor transmissions have a range of gear sets from very small to very large ep sets. They have anti frothing agents and also rust prevention additives in most case because lots of farm machinery sits for long periods between harvests etc.

I've used one of those at trade school and they are a beautiful machine, rock solid. As a general rule, the numbers on machine oil is the ISO grade, so Tellus 46 is ISO 46 with whatever extras they put in. You can probably get away with a general purpose ISO 68 hydraulic oil for the table feed gearbox and ways (a 20L bucket will be easily enough to fill the gearbox and way tanks and have plenty left for topping up).

Your local supplier should be able to advise on what would best suit for the climate, but as a hobby machine it's not going to matter a whole lot if you're can't match the officially recommended grade exactly.

    Update:
I just got some numbers for HMTH-mills (the new version of my WMTH)

    USAGE
    AMOUNT
    TYPE
    Coolant 35 liters
cutting oil (water-soluble) Mobil Mobilcut 100
cutting oil (water-insoluble) Mobil Mobilmet 734
Column oil 17 liters Shell Tellus S2 MX 32
    Mobil DTE #24
GearBox oil 3.3 liters Shell Tellus S2 MX 32
    Mobil DTE #24
    Saddle & Knee oil 1.8 liters Shell Tonna S2 M 68
    Mobil Vactra #2
    Grease Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2
    Mobil XHP 222

I think I can work with these numbers, as the machines are basically the same, but the HMTH-type comes with digital readouts, servo motors, an automatic way oil pump and some more gimmics like that.
