    Default First Project. Help Needed.

I know this might not be the right forum for this question but all help will be appreciated.

I am about to do a new project which consists of a heavy punch bag rig, pull up bar and dip bars. It is my first time using galvanised steel tubes.

I have attached a diagram of the project below. Can you please have a look at the diagram attached and let me know if I can make it better and stronger.

I am thinking of using 48 size tube in 2m length for the punchbags which might add up to 125 kg if I hang up 2 punchbags at the same time. Will it be strong enough?

And for the pull-up bar and the dip bars, I want to use size 42 tube because size 48 is too big for my hands. Again the load might be up to 115kg.
I will be grateful if you can help me out on this. I worked for hours on this but I have a feeling it won't be strong enough.

    Thanks in advance20200527_235641.jpg

As a fellow chin up/pull up enthusiast I'm happy to see such a project Even though these type if projects rarely surface here.

Firstly I assume this is outdoors?

Firstly, the vertical tube/pipe will need to be bigger than 48mm. Being cantilevered in the ground without support from above (being outdoors) it will endure a fair amount of stress with the weight of the bag swinging around. Even your pullup bar will need heavier uprights, especially if you do kipping pullups.

Have you considered something like 125mm cypress posts?

If you go steel then you would need at least 100mm steel unless you cross brace somehow with wire. But that would not look very nice and create other issues. You could arrange the poles in a square or rectangular footprint which would help make it more self supporting i doubt that would be practical with your dip bars.

In terms of the 42mm horizontal bars, I understand that's an individuals choice based on hand grip sizing BUT tube will not be strong enough. You will need to use heavy pipe or it will fail.

With the mounting of these horizontal bars to the posts, I would make 10mm thick flange plates. This will consist of a flat plate with a hole bored through. The size of the hole will be just big enough to slide the pipe through. Slide the pipe through until it's flush with the other side (10mm in my example) and the fully seam weld where the pipe enters the flange plate.

Drill two holes (above and below pipe) in the flange plates at each end and then through bolt to your posts.

I've seen a person be very lucky to avoid serious injury when a chin up bar failed at a weld at one end while they were using it. The mig welds had no penetration AND the pipe was not fitted through the flange plate as I suggested above.

    Just some ideas.

    Good luck!
