    Default Mitutoyo vernier imperial

    Hi Everyone,
I found this vernier in the bottom of one of my 'work' toolboxes, which I dont visit much these days.
It was covered in a sticky substance---I have no idea what.
    It wouldnt move at all.
I sprayed in in metho and then inox and let it sit overnight.
I found a jewelers screwdriver and managed to ease the tiny screws on the top of the sliding jaw. I assumed they held pressure on tiny internal gibs or similar.
I need to stress, I took gentle care not to strain or stress anything.

After several floods of metho and then inox , the sliding jaw moved about an inch and then froze again.
Ive sprayed it with shellite to sit overnight.

So my question is before I go any further, whats the best approach to renovating this vernier?
Since it is a 'work' instrument, I know it was a good quality one, and I know it would have gone out of service when metric was introduced.

Usually I use a digital vernier that changes metric/imperial at the touch of a button, but the one I have is not very accurate.
So I'd like to get this one going if I can.
    Please help!

    regards
    Brian

Mitutoyo have parts diagrams for all their measuring tools. https://www.mitutoyo.co.jp/eng/suppo...ce/parts_list/. Fill in the model number from the vernier or box it came in and like magic you see a breakdown of all the pieces. It'll help you figure out how to disassemble it. If my memory serves the two screws on top press on a little brass bar that controls the sliding pressure and to some extent how the jaws come together. I would soak it in a container of Varsol or mineral spirits for a few days before trying anything harsh. It is a pretty simple mechanism and if you take it apart there won't be too many parts to loose.

I've found turps is good to clean off many different types of adhesives, only downside I have found is that horrible turps odour.

    Thanks everyone for your input.
I systematically soaked it in shellite then Inox with a gentle wriggle in between.
over a day the shellite leached all the 'brown stuff' out and with the 'gibs' out the caliper is now working.
a soak overnight in shellite and I will start reassembling it today.
I think it will work ok now--hopefully.
