Default Who might supply this bearing?

    Hi all,

I'm giving a 1930s qualcast push mower some resto love.

The wheels have these bearings in them. One is save able, the other is rusty powder.

    IMG_20200520_173554.jpg

I'm not even sure how they are called. I took them to a bearing place and they just said they were old and can't supply.

Any clues as to getting replacements?

    Many thanks,

    Greg

    Hi Greg

That looks like a double row ball race cage. You need to get at the designations on the outer rim of the race !

Thanks BaronJ, it is a single row of bearings in there .. but I think the magic words are "ball race cage"!

I did neglect to say that the whole thing fits into a recess with one side sitting flat (the side facing down in the pic) and a shaft running through the center. The shaft has an angled section that rests on the inner part of the bearings.

I'll get some more pics ...

EDIT: shed, our posts crossed in mid air. Interesting - if I can't actually find the real thing to fit, I can always make some bushing for alignment and actually use a thrust bearing. Could work.

Actually you might have more luck at a bike shop https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/bi...silver-578372/

It looks very much like a bicycle head-stem bearing, might be worth trying a bike repairer?

I was going to say bike shop too, the other possibility is that seeing the cage looks ok just replace the balls. I have in the past bought them at bearing places but bike shops might have them too. One more choice is get something at bike shop with the correct size balls and swap them to your cage. cage can be cleaned up with some rust dissolver. Good luck with it.

    5/32?
Failing being able to find a cage the same size or reuse the ones you have with new balls, just leave them out and add an extra ball or two.
May make reassembly a little trickier, but other than that you'll never know the difference.

I have replaced plenty ball bearings without cages on bikes. They used to sell the balls at bike repair shops over here in the Netherlands, not sure if they stil do.
If you go that route, just put plenty of grease in the race and stick the balls in. They wil hang on to the grease during assembly.
Usually the number of balls is one ball less than chuckfull ;-)

Just use grease to retain the balls for assembly, and you won't miss the cage.
Use more balls, fill the space available then remove one to make sure it's not overcrowded.

Wow guys, thanks. I think we're on the money here - either a bike shop or just lose the cage and pack with grease and extra balls as per a bicycle - as it happens, while I was at bearing shop I got a bunch of balls in case I needed to fashion a cage or two. Nice!

Just a note that may have been missed - there are two in the mower (one for each wheel) and I can reuse one - but the other side is toast.

As an aside: Here are pics showing where they live - so I thinking the lose-the-cage-and-pack-with-grease thing should work just fine:

Thanks all - that's given me something to go on. The old mower might yet still live again. Here it is:

    Thanks again,

    Hi Guys,

I've got one of those ! Its been hiding in the back of the garage for the past four decades, ever since we got a flymo. I had totally forgoten about it until the wife saw that picture and reminded me we have one of those.
