    Default TU-3008G - Opti-Turn Bench Lathe

Anyone had a look at the TU-3008G - Opti-Turn Bench Lathe. Not sure how long Hare and Forbes have had this, but only noticed it recently. Will see if I can get a look at one this week sometime, unless someone says don't bother.

    Default Tu3008g

I have one of these, mmmmmmmmmm, where do I start.
    First problem
The speeds printed on the front facia are not the speeds you actually get ( certinaly not on the one I have ).
Knew something was wrong when I first started tge lathe and trued all the different speed settings, some ran at the same speed.
Bought one of those rpm meters, yup, was right, not one of the listed speeds on the front facia actually ran at that given speed, all under.
It just wont cut a nice fine surface for a bearing press fit, its not crap bar that I am turning down eirther.
Have tried HSS tool bits ground down, carbide. Only way to get a smooth cut is using the topslide by hand

Not made in Germany either, in another post I replied to when someone else was looking at them, my tailstock, the Germans must have stepped out for a extended lunch break when the chinese used an angle grinder to level the base to fit the ways. Rough as coarse grain sandpaper.

My suggestion for those who are looking at this lathe, take a rpm meter with you and see if the one they have on the floor does what it says, spindle speed wise.

I will post up the spindle speeds I have measured, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the reply. I am well aware they are not German. I have looked at one at Hare and Forbes. Unfortunately could not see everything working as some of the gears were missing from the leadscrew feed. The guy showing me could not understand what was wrong untill I got him to remove the end cover and pointed out the problem to him. I need a lathe with the 38mm spindle bore and can't afford the AL960B which would be a better choice. Weight is another hurdle, as I could not handle something the weight of the 960B here at home, but could with the Optimum.

    Default TU3008G Spindles Speeds Actual

These are the spindle speeds i recorded using a rpm meter, checked them twice, same result. First set are the originals on the front facia. I bought the lathe new in 2019.

    RPM D E F
    H A 750 1400 2400
    B 560 1050 1800

    L A 165 300 530
    B 125 225 400

    Actual Speeds I measured

    RPM D E F

    H A 548 1000 1290
    B 547 1002 381

    L A 120 220 381
    B 120 220 380

You can see there is a big difference. The instruction manual that came with it said it may be necessary to change the gear train to suit a fine cut, done that, no difference, it is a internal problem, somethng is missing or the wrong gear may have been installed in the wrong place, who know, also, there are two places for the belt to moved to when you open the end up, no mention anywhere in the manual to change that setting.
Its a boat anchor until I get my other lathe repaird and running again.

The manual that I saw on line mentions changing the belt position for high speed.
Changing gears on the gear train will have no effect on RPM of the machine, it will only effect Feed Rate , MM Pitch or TPI.
Maybe you should start a thread on your surface finish issues, maybe it's not all machine related.
