Home made boring bar
I have been trying to purchase a HSS Boring Bar for my small Lathe, tool holder takes 10mm/3/8 tools can't seem to find anything, I have decided to make one is 4140 ( I have plots of it) suitable for the bar with a HSS cutter
brazed on.

Yes. Should be fine.
The worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

Hi China,
I've made a few boring bars in my time !
Personally I would prefer not to braze anything. I use bits of broken taps, drills, in fact anything that I can usefully grind to make a cutter that I can fit into a hole in any old length of suitable (read right size) rod or bar, even turning a bit of square down to fit.

Here are some pictures of ones that I've made. That first one is a piece of HSS tool bit, that I ground down. Originally for internal threading. Then I bought an insert tool which I now use for threading. And that is only because of the difficulty of grinding single pointing threading bits. A carbide insert for threading is wonderfulBest Regards:

A grade 8 bolt is a good cheap source for the 4140 to make the bar. The ones I have used drilled and tapped very nicely.
The 16mm fits into one of my QCTP post units. From there I can step them down to the diameter i need.
Like Baron J I save all my broken HSS pieces.
It works well and is cost effective.

China i dont know what your lathe can handle but you can also weld a 10mm thick bit of flat on the side of a larger dia bar, or even a few diameters and lengths to give you a bit of range in the size/depth of holes

G'Day China,
Here is a Ø8 boring bar made from a M8 grade 8 bolt shank. The HSS tool bit was ground from a broken No.1 centre drill, that sits in a drilled hole. The HSS is held in position by an M3 grub screw in the end of the bar. This was used to cut a 2.5mm wide keyway, but could also be used for general boring.

Hope this helps.

Don.
