Macson surface grinder.
I have been working on a Mascon surface grinder.
Not so much a rebuild as a reconfiguration.
New bench, motor and VFD.
I plan to build a dust collection and filter in the future.
I'm nearly ready to fire it up, but first I want to drain and replace the spindle oil.
I don't know what grade of hydraulic oil to use.
I have iso32 and iso46.
Please let me know what you use?
Thank you MarkLast edited by Poloris; 6th May 2020 at 01:40 PM. Reason: spelling

Hi there,
Given it's age and most likely your occasional use, I suspect it will be happy with either.
I assume you can't find any instructions or owners manual and assume it's not written on an affixed plate anywhere.

Some time ago I think it was member RC who was involved in a thread on spindle oils. One oil I think was Mobil Vaculine?? and was ISO5. It was also mentioned of diluting the spindle oil with kerosene and with some spindles running on straight kero.

Mark,
The Jones and Shipman 540 manual for the plain bearing model wheel head, recommend Mobil Velocite 3 so one would presume the Macson would be similar. A link to the Mobil site https://www.mobil.com/en-us/industri...-oil-no-series

Spindle oils
Thanks fellas, researching the leads you have given me is pretty daunting.
I suspect of these types of oils, Castrol Hyspin, is the most readily available in Perth.
I have most of a 20L drum of hyspin ISO 32 so if I don't find something better that will have to do.
Thanks again MarkI've become a tool of my tools.

Mark,
I know nothing of the macsons, but if the spindle is a plain bearing type then ISO 32 will be pretty heavy. In my opinion. The clearances here are very very small and typically an oil viscosity something like diesel or kerosine or more appropriate. They are about ISO 2, not 32. As mentioned, some grinders _specify_ kerosine as the spindle oil. Mobile Velocite #3 is ISO 2.
I'm no oil or grinding expert, but my recent experiences with a plain bearing brown and sharpe #2 say this is true. The #2 specifies ISO 2. During the rebuild I was using kerosine and thanks to a gift of a litre of Velocite #3 from forum member jhovel I have switched to that. They are about the same viscosity. Honestly, it looks more like wee than oil.
I would try kerosine before ISO32.
Of course, all the above is for plain bearinga. If it runs ball bearings then the spindle will likely run at a similar speed to a fast-running 2J bridgeport spindle - and that is ISO22, or Velocite #10. If you need some, I have some spare. I'm in Melbourne.
Greg.

Mascon surface grinder oil.
I found the surface grinder is "equipped with sensitive precision ball bearings for lasting performance and accuracy".
So I may not need a exotic oil, but I'm still looking.
I connected the motor to VSD using the original switch as a isolating switch, however my circuit breaker kept tripping.
Anyway I'm not a patient person so I wired the cable straight into the drive temporarily and turned it over at half speed for 30 seconds.
All good, but the dark brown muck in the oiler dose not look healthy so it has to go.
Tomorrow I will wire in a new switch and run the cable in conduit, there are just too many moving parts that could damage a loose cable.

Hi,
I like your solution to the replacement motor mount. Any chance of some more photos of that part? What frame size motor is that? Also these grinders don't have plain bearings.

LamestLlama I've attached a few photos of the motor mount.
Not the best solution because the old belt was too short so I had to get a new one made.
In hindsight if I had moved the stop/rest thing so it projected on the other side the base, I could moved the mount closer to the pivot point and reused the belt, saving $50.
Motor is 3 phase .37 kw 2840 rpm I think Al 71 is the size.

Surface grinder finished for now
I've picked up 5 weeks, so I've finished this project for now.
I used hyspin 32 in the spindle which is leaking from the rear.
I surfaced a piece of 3mm magnetic stainless that will become a sewing machine bobbin cover and I'm happy with it.

Hi Mark,
Congratulations on a very nice result.
I have a Macson bench SG restoration underway (though very much on the back burner), so I was interested to see your motor mount solution.
Likewise that really neat inverter drive enclosure, complete with a cute little window and ventilation fan - did that come with the VFD or did you source it separately?
Cheers,
Bill

Hello Mark
Is the drip feed oiler an original component as mine does not have one. It has an oil sight glass at the left hand side.
Thanks tom

Its always good to get a thumbs up for a project.
The drip feed oiler came with the machine and delivers a drop every 8 seconds consistently as adjusted.
WCD the enclosure is a industrial weight box that was brought on gumtree and modified to suit.
I noticed in a previous post you have table stops fitted to your machine.
Can you please post a photo of these, I want to make some when I get home again.
I'm attaching a photo of my method of broaching a pulley keyway, it works well.

Hi Mark,
Actually mine has no table stops, but a kind forum member did send me these photos of his (apologies to that person, I have lost your name).
so I have attached them here.
Table stop detail 2.jpgTable stop detail 1.jpg
They look really nice, though having never used a machine like this it is not clear to me when one would use micrometer stops on the X axis of a surface grinder.
Cheers,
