Default Fly cutter for pocket knife blade slot

Thank you steamloco1954 for the thread about the fly cutter.

For a long time I have been searching for a method to form a nail nick slot in re made pocket knife blades.

To explain, I collect old time pocket knives and on some of the types I have acquired the blade is either worn away from sharpening or just plain broken off from abuse.
    A sample pic below.

Hence the need to make a new blades. Until now i thought the only way was with a milling machine and slitting saw which I dont have.

What I do have is the lathe, a means to make a fly cutter and some HSS and a good drill press which has very little run out.

Also I have recently acquired a pretty good cross slide vice from racingtadpole. I am confident that the Drill Press will do the job as the load is minimal.

I'll keep you all posted with pics now as I am now able to transfer pics from the Android phone to the iMac.

    Default Fly cutter

    The old goat again
I would be more inclined to turn the flycutter in the lathe and mount the work in the crosslide vice.
From personal experience the drill press is for drilling and other processes lead to a disaster.
A flared cup wheel of around 320 grit would grind the feature in and hold the profile if not pushed to hard. I bought a T & C grinder that had some in the mess delivered. Only 40mm dia so a high RPM is needed. They were used to nick clearance in step drills at the transition point.

How about using the tip of a dove tail cutter to do the nail slot?

    Hi Steamloco1954
At the moment i have the equipment to attempt the process in the drill press.

The cross slide vice is a fairly big one and would not fit unless I sat it on the longitudinal lathe ways. Until I am sure the drill press won't work I will stick with the DP for the moment.

I tried some mounted stones I shaped with wheel dressing stick and mounted diamond point but the stoned crumbled away too easy. They were cheap ones .

Same workholding deal for the diamond point. The blade will have to nail nicked before it is shaped if I am to hold it it a QCTP holder which is the only way I can picture (in my head) of grasping it.

I am not dismissing your ideas out of hand but I will have to find out the hard way that the drillpress does not work.

    Hello Graham.
If your using a mounted point in a drill press you will find the rpm is way too low. The work will then crush dress the abrasive and cutting will be minimal. If you can clamp a die grinder to the drill quill and use the drill press only for feed, the abrasive will perform much better. My 320 grit cup wheels were chipped when I checked them so went to the bin. There are a few p120 cup wheels surplus to my needs if you want one. Approx 40 X 20 X 10mm. They are 38A and orange?
Send me a PM and I can post a wheel if it will help.
