Different qualities to the swarf seems like a handy way to differentiate between brass and bronze.

I haven’t turned a lot of bronze but somewhere have a bag full of Phosphor Bronze curlies after turning down a bunch of bushes. Haven’t seen anything like this with brass. Cu is completely different as it tends to gall.

Brass can be made to chip with ground carbide inserts for ally and an aggressive feed rate, it's quite satisfying

Very light yellowish
Hi all,
I've read this thread and decided to tack my query on here in the hope that my problem will be solved. Attached are two photos of the dismantled chuck/ ratchet housing of a Tough Major brace.
#1 is in daylight without flash, #2 is using flash. The greeny yellow stripe is the reflection of my hi-vis jumper. I've filed the plating (Nickel?) off and in #1 you can just make out the remains of the round steel pin which was the ratchet selector retainer. The metal is very pale yellow, non-magnetic and I'm leaning towards White Bronze but I need an expert opinion.
I'm in the process of writing an article about Tough braces and need to get my facts right when I say what the housing is made of.
Cheers,
Geoff.

They're CCGT; polished on top, ground sides, very high positive rake https://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/Famil...geType=4&rel=T
Perfect for anything soft; ally, brass, plastic, etc.

I am intending to purchase one of these 10 mm (I have a small lathe) https://www.lprtoolmakers.com.au/car...s-free-insert/
first job will be boring brass, tips it comes with are not suited to brass so I am looking for suitable tips.
