    Default Mystery (to me) items

My lathe came with a few bits that I have no idea of their purpose,...here are 2 examples

Item 1. The three holes are threaded, and the flat face has had something adhered to it, like a gasket of some sort. Stamped Q1 36277840

    Mystery item 1a.jpg

Item 2. quite possibly part of something bigger? The centre block raises & lowers when the brass wheel is turned. No markings at all. Quite possibly home made.

    Mystery item 2.jpg

Anyone sure of what they are??
    Any educated guesses??

Item number one could be from anything totally unrelated to your lathe, possibly gotten from the scrap pile to make something else out of.
Number 2, appears to possibly be a locking block of some description as it has a dovetail on both parts. Possibly for the compound slide. As there's no pic of your lathe it makes it hard to give a definite answer.
Let us know how you get on with my guess.

No suggestions about the first item.

Second item may be leveling device for the lathe. Keith Rucker (VintageMachinery.org) recently released a video using 6 similar but longer units to level the bed for a metal planer, one unit under each leg and foot for the device. The units he was using had a total of about 0.070in height variation over about 4 inches of travel, and thus could provide quite fine micro adjustment to level the machine bed, shims under the levelers being used for coarse adjustment.

I could be on the wrong track entirely, as you merely said that the moving part raises and falls as you turn the knob, but did not give an indication of the range of movement available. To be useful, you would need a reasonably matched set to provide one under each mounting point of the lathe, plus clamp down bolts as well.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

My lathe doesn't have a compound. It doesn't look like it belongs to my lathe, but maybe part of an accessory, or not related at all. 95% sure it was home made.

It is very lightweight, the thread is about M3 and the brass knob is soft soldered to the thread as well as grub screwed..
The only bit that moves is that little block in the groove, and it does not protrude very far, 3mm-ish.
All the sides not visible are flat & plain, no holes or fixings at all. If it was for that purpose, it is not related to my old chinese banger. 4 bolts through the cast iron is as good as it gets on mine

I think you are bang on the money Steve.

It looks identical now that I just discovered that the round bit on the bottom comes off. That is a little 6" ruler, the std size ruler does not fit.

Unfortunately I don't have the other part, but it could be a project
