    Default Nuttall 6.5 conehead and geared info.

    I am hoping to create a sticky for Nuttall lathe information, I have the following questions;
    1/ Maximum spindle rpm, both gear and cone type?
    2/ Metric and Imperial change gear tooth counts?
    3/ Recommended oil weights?
    Any info is appreciated.

    Regards,
    Derek.

    Hi Derek

    I have a 1948 model geared head . Its a bit of a monstor of a thing. Funny thing is there is a local here with the surname NUTTALL , I mentioned the lathes to this person and got a complete blank look

    Thank you Morris, I beleive its quite a common surname.
    For those who have no steady rest or drip tray see the attach png files for dimensions.
    Also, can anybody please confirm if there is only one large change gear with 126t being for imperial and 127t for metric?nuttall1.png

    Thanks for tip Caskwarrior on spindle speed, most of the forums seemed to point to 1000rpm as the limit for plain spindles.

    Does anybody agree 6.5 cone lathe has 1 large change gear?
    127t for metric?
    126t for imperial?

    That lathe has roller bearings I believe. Plain bearing spindle speeds all depend on the diameter of the spindle. For a big lathe 1000 rpm would be really pushing plain bearings.

    Default Speed

    The speed chart on my geared head 6.5 says top speed around 750 and slowest speed 18 rpm
