    Default H59 brass

I need to machine some 8mm brass rod . It's a carby throttle shaft . I am milling a section down to 4mm thick for the butterfly . What would be the most suitable milling cutter for a nice clean finish ?

    Hi Morrisman,

If it were me I would be using a straight sided woodwork router bit ! Straight sides and no rake, run it fast and take fine light cuts so that you don't bend it. Or drill a suitable hole in a block of hardwood to support the shaft whilst machining.

Edited to add, you could use the same support to cut the slit for the butterfly !

    Thanks baron
The butterfly is fixed by two 3-48 screws

    Hi Morrisman,

After you have slit the rod put a piece of scrap brass plate in the slot and then drill and thread as needed.
Just leave the bar in the jig.

Fyi, all woodwork bits have a positive cutting angle
