    Default venom substitute?

I've been using Trefolex for years for tapping etc, and occasionally in drilling... but I tried some of the Sutton Venom fluid when using a holesaw on plate - pure gold!!!!

the pack mentions oil, and coconut/palm oil... does anyone here know what's in Venom, and if there is a substitute for it (local Bunnings no longer sells it)

    thanks,
    Des

The MSDS says Venom contains 60% aliphatic hydrocarbon (oil or fat) hydrocarbon solvent and an corrosion inhibitor. The oil/fat CAS # says it is Sotolon, a lactone and an extremely powerful aroma compound, with the typical smell of fenugreek or curry at high concentrations and maple syrup, caramel, or burnt sugar at lower concentrations.
There’s no CAS # for the solvent or inhibitor.

Coconut oil is expensive as a food grade oil but non-food grade is probably not so. Industrial Palm oil is cheaper as it’s used as a fuel.

    Hi Des,
Thanks for your tip on this cutting fluid.
I imagine Bunnings will get in for you on request, and since it is a current item in many stores should mean (in a perfect world) no extra charge for getting it in.

On Michael’s MSDS it gives The CAS # as "64742-4-89“ which is quite different to the one I was reading. That CAS # is the same as for Isopar-L which is a ”synthetic isoparaffinic hydrocarbon which is manufactured from a petroleum based raw material. It is colorless, odorless and makes the working environment comfortable when compared to traditional solvents like white spirit and kerosene.“

Thanks all for the advice - didn't think to check the MSDS (not firing on all four cylinders today....)

I was quite suprised with how well it works for drilling, but I haven't used it for anything else. It was used by the trady who helped me put up my shed, he'd splash it on every hole we were drilling.. In my shed now, I have some in a cheap oil can and put a little in the track of the holesaw, and instead of dusty swarf, I get stringy chips.

I have used Canola Oil. It works pretty well. Not as good as Trefolex

    Default Rocol

    I use ROCOL RTD.
    link to Oz website

You can buy it online from RS components and other retailers as a paste, fluid or spray.

    500ml for $27.70

I have no association with ROCOL or any for the resellers.

I also like the ROCOL coolant but It’s a bit exxy for my budget. I managed to score some from the men’s shed who were given a near full 20L drum for nothing a couple of years ago. I doubt they have used more than a litre per year. I’d use diesel but really don’t like the smell.

I did find Total tools can get me a 4L container of it for around $160 inc (Blackwoods were $201, bunnings special order eventually called me back @ $209).

The maths is better at the 4L purchase, but I know whatever it's made of is probably less than $50 in ingredients....
