Anyone want to grind a cutter for me?
I have a tapered cutter on what I believe is an MT3 shank I’d like touched up.
Anyone have a T&C grinder, the skills and the motivation to assist?
Don’t mind paying return postage if you’re interstate, and certainly don’t expect a freebie (happy to work out a deal, whether liquid currency or legal tender is up to you).
I don’t have a T&C grinder (or the space for one) or the necessary understanding required to use one
If you are interested and want to have a crack, feel free to message me.
Also not averse to taking it to a commercial outfit if anyone has any suggestions on where to take it in Adelaide.

Do you want to use that as an actual countersink? It would only be good for drilling type ops.

Hi Racingtadpole, Guys,
I might be wrong, but that looks like it might be an awkward cutter to regrind.
What is its application ?Best Regards:

Yes I want to use it to cut tapers into holes, I don’t think it’s been taught any other tricks at this point.
Not prepared to disclose the actual application at this point because if it works I will be looking to commercialise the product. At the moment it’s purely experimental. I could cut the taper on the lathe, but work holding is a bit more challenging.

Hi Racingtadpole,
In that case it would be more cost effective to buy a countersink bit. Or if you have any carbide woodwork router bits, use one of them. They work very well as you have probably seen from some of my pictures.Best Regards:

What's the included angle? I suspect finding a carbide bit that matches (or is near enough) would be both easier and cheaper than trying to sharpen that. Carbitool have a 60 degree https://www.carbitool.com.au/product...solid-carbide/
Also, is it just the camera playing tricks or are the flutes not actually straight? Cos that'd be a right pain to even think about

The Pilot hole will be somewhere in the vicinity of 22-25mm, I’ve not seen a router bit that big.
Yeah it’s semi helical, no trick photography. The cutting head is about 50mm across at its widest, and about 16mm at its smallest so a router bit is nowhere near big enough.

Hi Racingtadpole,
Ouch, that is a big cutter, the one in the picture doesn't look that big. Those teeth look to have a double angle on them.
I've just been and looked at my router bit set ! My biggest cutter is a 40 mm diameter 45 degree angle one, it is about 10 mm diameter at the small end.
Are you actually wanting to cut a taper or just deburr ? Also if you are wanting to cut a taper, what angle are you looking for ?Last edited by BaronJ; 11th Feb 2020 at 11:03 PM. Reason: Added Questions!

Does it need to be that particular shape? I have a couple of round over router bits that are approx 25mm radius (from memory), if they're of any help?

Not what you asked for, but I have a Tree boring head that is capable of boring a tapered hole. If you just need one or two done as prototypes I could help that way.

What type of material do you intend to cut with it? It looks like it might have been made as a trade or tech school project and may only be case hardened mild steel.

The small end is 16mm, large end is 52, I’ll work out the angle later when I’m not on a bus. Despite it being semi helical the flutes appear to be flat ground as evidenced by the cutting grind becoming larger at the point of rotation around the axis. There may well be some merit in the suggestion that it was an apprentice project, I don’t know it’s history, it came to me as part of a job lot from a deceased estate.
My widget needs to be made from steel as it is a wear part of sorts. I may make the prototype out of ally though for no other reason than I have some in about the right size.
Even if I don’t wind up using it for this particular job a sharp cutter is a useful cutter, not so much if it’s blunt...
China, thanks Lonsdale is a 3 water bag trip, but I might try the saw doctor at Pooraka. Never even thought twice about connecting sharpening rotary lawnmower blades with milling cutters. If I don’t have any luck there I’ll give your suggested company a call
Michael, thanks for the offer, I may well be in touch

Another option?
These "Taper drills" may be of interest: from https://mcjing.com.au, who do seem to keep some uncommon items.

I have no connection with the supplier other than as an occasional customer.
The shank sizes seem a bit spindly particularly on the larger cutters, but that could be addressed.
I do have one of those on the list - a 36-50mm taper drill acquired for a project, as a blank for re-sharpening to a custom shape.

However the cutter remains unaltered and unused, sleeping in a drawer.
Cheers, Bill
