    Hi Joe, Guys,
Perhaps dipping it into a bucket of hydrochloric acid or some other strong acid might dissolve the corrosion and leave the two metals untouched?
I think this is a bad Idea ! The hydrochloric acid will attack and damage both metals.
    Best Regards:

I would also go the heat route, but be VERY careful temp wise as brass will melt/deform easily.

You can see where the brass has been spread though earlier pressing/hammering efforts, so it's basically made the situation worse.

The end game will probably be to cut/drill one side and crack/spread it with a cold chisel. That will open the centre enough to remove the brass. Then it's a simple matter to grind and fillet weld the slot.

    Cheers Rob

    Default Success!

Thanks to all for the suggestions, we attacked it with heat today and followed that up with "enthusiastic percussive maintenance" - i.e. a big hammer - and it finally came out after 50 or more years.

This is the valve core and handle after separation and cleanup.

And this is the handle installed on the
replacement valve. To get an idea of the sizes, the flange is 6" in diameter.

Interestingly, looking at mating surfaces there is no sign of corrosion - it's possible that the handle was heat shrunk onto the spindle, although why they would have done so is a mystery, especially as there's a ¼" retaining split pin.

Thanks again for the suggestions, it reflects the value of these forums.

i would try some heat on the opposite side from the handle, use a 15 or 20 tip in the oxy, heat it up quick. It does look a little like the end of the shaft is peened, if heat doesn't work you may have to cut the handle off. if you are just trying to get the handle off to fit to another valve you may be better off just making a replica for the other valve. what is the valve off? my guess is something broad gauge SAR

Makes the 4" grinder look very small.

In this case, around 7 tons of coal and 3,500 gallons of water.

Some do burn heavy oil, not diesel, and a few burn wood but the bulk use coal. The Victorian Goldfields locos burn oil but all the SA preserved locos use coal.
Some locos were converted back and forth between the 2 fuels in their day but that's a compromise as the fireboxes really need to be different to get the best from each type of fuel.
