Default It only takes one idiot

Get a load of what this manufacturer has done.
I gotta try fixing this, it's so frustrating but not sure how to go about it yet.
So the pulley cover on my mill has these flip catches. They put the damn things on upside down. They bloody catch all right. All the time. esp when you're trying to lift that heavy lid, while trying to balance with one foot on a ladder and the other on the machine and stretching across to the back at the same time and these flamin' catches keep getting caught under their hooks. Crikey !

If you can't get it off as a salvageable item, these can be bought from various places. I always get this sort of Item from UES International. They have branches in every state.

Even the green box store has them in zinc plated and stainless. Predrilled for screw fixing but that just makes for a nice plug weld.

Do you even need them? The weight of the lid alone should be enough to hold it shut. I know what I’d be doing to them, and it would take not much more than a minute.

It doesn't look like there's enough surface area to mount the latch the other way around without it protruding below the base.
Just superglue a small button magnet to the lid so it will hold the latch when you flip it back up.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

Because it's too high up when you're standing on the floor.

    It will rattle without latches.

Neodymium magnets were the first thing I tried. They get in the way when closing the latch.

Yep, thought of that afterwards. Few pieces of sticky back foam tape should fix that though.

I’ve seen some versions that have a small doing to push the loop out when released.
You could probably fashion some sort of spring out of an old pen spring.

Otherwise - some shock cord style ute cover loops.

    Problems

Catches hooking up during lifting process . SOLUTION :Tie up the catch bails - tie bails facing back to back with a piece of string , duct tape ,or strong rubber band so they cant fall back during the lift.

Avoid the ladder- SOLUTION -use a decent stand Gorilla stand.jpg

Heavy lifting SOLUTION- Fit a pair of eye bolts in the top of the cover - eye bolt.jpg

heavy lifting - SOLUTION- Lift up with a cheap block and tackle - block and tackle.jpg
I would add shackles to the eye bolts as well.

Yes It will cost a few dollars but substantially cheaper than the medical bills for the potential accident than can occur.

The opposite of what you do when you want to move it to the left.
