H&F AL320G quick change tool post
Ok one more quicker question, looking at a quick change tool post for the AL320G that is coming out of storage.
I see H&F now have one (https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L292) but scant details on it.
Similarly Paramount Browns has this one https://www.paramountbrowns.com.au/p...nge-tool-post/ but similarly few details. Going to head there tomorrow to have a squiz.
eBay has the usual suspects, but guessing various quality. AXA seems popular like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/QUICK-CH...G/163605990888
Some sites say look for 16mm tooling while others suggest staying with 12mm.
Anyone want to cut through the chatter?

In general bigger tooling is better than smaller tooling, but on a smaller lathe you will need to check that you can get the 16mm tooling down on centreline. If you can buy 16mm and 12mm blocks for the QCTP you have in mind get some of each and see how you go.
As a for instance of why bigger is better a 16mm CCMT turning tool typically comes with a CCMT09 inserts, a 12mm CCMT tool typically has CCMT06 inserts, prices of the two inserts are similar.
Its not too hard to find 16mm holders that use the otherwise wasted !00° corners for turning facing and boring, 12mm holders that do the same are much scarcer.

Hi Takai, Guys,
I got rid of my QCTP in favour of making a "Norman Patent" one ! I did a write up a while back. I also made one for a rear toolpost. I wish that I had done it years ago.

This may be of assistance for supplier links.
Tool post you linked mentions it being both piston and wedge which is somewhat ambiguous. General consensus seems to be a wedge type is better than a piston type..
Edit: you’ll probably also find that the Chinese AXA holders will only hold a tool that is 14mm, but there’s heaps of posts on here from people that have milled them out to take 16mm tooling.

For those who may not be aware General tools at Cavan are the South Australian agent for H&F and in my experience seem to have more knowledge than Paramounts

Have a look at the AXA wedge style QCTP set from MagPro. It appears to be identical to the AXA QCTP that I fitted to my AL320G, but I bought mine from Yankee land.
You will need to machine up a new central bolt for the QCTP. This is the sketch of the one I made for my lathe. Note that MagPro prices are all before GST is added.
I am very happy with my AXA QCTP. Best thing I have done for my lathe.

Adelaide Tools can also supply HAFCo.
My experience with both is you are better off ordering direct online if you know what you want as the freight will be cheaper. I purchased a radius die set from HAFCo through GT and freight was $22, had I bought it direct the HAFCO website says $12. At no point did GT tell me there would be a freight charge until I collected it from them
Ive just ordered a heap of stuff from HAFCo via Adelaide tools as part of an insurance settlement, including a corner notcher, quoted freight from HAFCo online is $55, AT are charging $109

Yeah. I’m actually a Melburnian now. Just over here to pack up the garage and bring my mill and lathe out of storage.
Part of packing up is getting rid of a large amount of scrap at Paramount Browns and hence seeing if they have anything good to take back.
Question still stands though. But given The MagPro lead this one is now coming in front http://www.mag-pro.com.au/goods.php?id=221

My only complaint with Mag Pro is the deceptive pricing through fixed freight charges. One tool holder is $15 and $10 freight, 10 tool holders is $150 and $100 freight..
My take on what size tooling, whatever gets the job done. I have a mix of 8/10/12/16 and 20.

Hi Guys
I'll add to that and say, I am not too impressed with Mag Pro either.
I purchased 2 x QCTP blocks from them marked 250-202 and a $20 dial gauge.
They advertise their tools on the website without including the GST component and I understand that is illegal to advertise without including the GST.
The GST cost is added later at the checkout.
My blocks have not been delivered as yet and I found well after I ordered and paid for them they were out of stock.
No confirmation of order was ever sent and therefor I was unaware of the Nil Stock until I back checked my account order online.
The dial indicator turned up after 9 days by itself. Nothing in that package to indicate the missing QCTP blocks were Nil Stock.
Their response to my email inquiry ( 3 days ago) as an indicator for the delivery times for was:
<How are you ? I am sorry for the delay for your holder of quick change . Today the Customer House just release the goods to us . And today the goods will be arrived at our warehouse .
We can send the holder of quick change to you tomorrow . You should receive them in several days .
Sorry again for the delay !
Regards & Have a nice day ! >
Tell me again why i should buy local!

I found this video very helpful.
The link in the original post refers to the H&F part #L292 which they call a QA-140 type.
The video shows a reference table, at the 4:30 mark, which I haven't seen anywhere else.
From the table I see that the QA-140 style matches the BXA specification.
I found this information very useful as I can now purchase from a much wider range of suppliers

Seeking some guidance.
Looking for a QCTP for my 320G. Normal used for making a few automotive parts for myself and building/repairing model engines. I've noted over recent months there is a bit of a supply issue with piston/wedge type QCTP, some sellers are out of stock. I'm guessing this might be why the European style (Chinese built) 60 position QCTP are making an appearance.
THE SPECS IN A NUT SHELL
AL320G
Swing over bed 320mm (12.5")
Max swing over cross slide 170mm (just under 7")
WEDGE TYPE
AXA 111: For Lathe swing up to 300mm : tool holder series 250-100 recommended tool size 12mm : Delux set $280Ausee
BXA 222: For Lathe swing range 240-380mm : tool holder series 250-200 recommended tool size 16mm : Delux set $360Ausee
40 POSITION EUROPEAN STYLE
A1 For Lathe swing 150-300: tool holders 540-100 tool size range 16mm or 20mm 5 piece set from $410MGPRO $395mimontumenergy $495(470)redfox
E5 For Lathe swing 200-400: tool holders 540-200 tool size range 20mm or 25mm 5 piece set from $500MGPRO
Question 1
What QCTP models are right for me? The dilema is the AL320 swing is 20mm dia (10mm rad to centre) higher than the lower priced AXA111 and A1 QCTP spec.
Question 2
Noting Bob Ward commentary about bigger tooling. Would is be better to go for the more expensive 40 position QCTP but I would need to source the more expensive 20mm/25mm tool holders. Or is 16mm sufficient?
Questions 3
Has anyone fitted the 40 position QCTP.
Attaches is the A1/E3 spec, and as noted by TheApprentice in the previous post, the AXA/BXA specs are listed in the video at 4:30 and 5:30.
Thanks in advance,
Greg

The BXA would be the more suitable for your size lathe.
