Default Looking for a cheaper option?

    Hi,

I recently acquired a new drill chuck but it's a 3/8-24 internal female for the arbor.

I've been looking around for a suitable arbor on the internet and found this on ebay:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/32266154...m=322661542690

It's what I want and I'm happy with the price but not the postage to Australia. Does anyone else know where else to look or have a better postage option?

I've tried Blackwoods, Bakers, General Tools etc and found nothing.

    Ben.

You could phone/ email these guys -
    https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/
    or
    https://www.lprtoolmakers.com.au/
and see if they can get something in for you. (I've used both, but have no other relationship with them)

It could be a curly one though as threaded chucks like that are normally fitted to hand held power tools, so an MT3 arbor to suit will not be simple.

Could you get something like this, turn it down to the correct diameter on the lathe and thread it with a die? Not sure if it would be hardened or not though, so that may make things difficult.

Both ends on that are likely to be hardened, he'd be better off looking for a MT3 blank arbour - the non-taper end of those are left "soft" to allow them to be be turned to suit the job at hand. Asteg Engineering Supplies in Adelaide usually have them in stock.

There is some blanks on eBay but they are over double the price. How deep does the hardening usually go? Could they be ground down before being turned to remove hardening?

That's an idea of was thinking of. I went out and had a look in my workshop drawer and I have an spare blank arbor that I received from Chronos a couple of years ago. It's machinable so I might give it a go.

Not sure but I think you have a lathe, has it crossed your mind to make one.
