shrinking disc
A tool panelbeaters use, a disc mounted on a angle grinder. Would it be possible to make a disc out of stainless, rather than buying one ? They are not cheap to buy . The friction heats up the area to be shrunk , usually a spray of water is used .

I can't see why not.
They are ~1.6mm stainless according to this:

The commercial ones look like they are pressed out of sheet, but I reckon it would be hard to get that outer flange formed nicely and keep the face flat fabricating one yourself. I don't think the thickness is critical, more that they form them out of 1.6mm for manufacturing reasons.
I think it might be easier to turn one up out of plate. Probably 6 or 8mm would be thick enough to get a similar radius on the edge as what the commercial ones have, recess the center for the flange nut and just leave the rest original thickness.

Common sense should have told him that the 4" grinder was too small for the disc.
The other way would have been to extend the A/G handle.
Common sense is not always common.
