    Default Ratchet and Pawl source

Anyone know of a source for small ratchets and pawls? Need something with an OD of around 50mm, 36 teeth, 12mm bore and 10 to 12mm width. Can't find anything close to this. Will consider other sizes and tooth count.

Have a look at boat winches, whether they have enough teeth I don't know. If we had an idea as to what you're trying to make, other ideas may come to light. I have several gears here that would do, and the pawl could be a bit of flat bar welded to some rod, with a spring to hold it in place, is that the type of thing you're wanting?
Gears out of a car gearbox with bushes to reduce the bore to 12mm is another choice. As I said earlier, if we know what you're trying to achieve, it could be a better mousetrap?

Might be a good idea, might not. Going to convert the bench drill to a single lever. Just seems like raising the lever to what is a convenient position to start drilling, rather than the choice of three handles that never seem to be in just the right position would be better.

    Hi Nev,

My "FOBCO" drill press uses a single sliding bar handle with a lock screw so that you can set it to any length you want. The only problem that I have with that is if I'm tapping a hole and unscrewing the tap, sometimes you have to play "dodge the handle" or it can smack you in the face.
    Best Regards:

I adjust the table to get the handles right.

Have you considered using a modified socket ratchet?

If that's what you're planning to do, have you thought about your quill, as will require some sort of resistance, otherwise it'll just flick back up again.

Along a similar line, perhaps either a ratchet spanner or a roller clutch. Roller clutch would give infinite positions rather than being limited by the tooth count on a ratchet.

A ratchet is an easy thing to make up on a mill with a dividing head. I guess you could even produce a ratchet with a file if you needed one. Similarly, a pawl is just a length of material that gravity or a spring holds against the ratchet.

Mind you, 36 teeth on a 50mm OD is a pretty fine tooth spacing. The step is just under 0.4mm, the run to the next step is only 4.3mm. I'd suggest a sprag bearing except they can not reverse.
Can you do something like a knurled collar with a clamp on handle so you can adjust the position easily?

One thing that most people forget (and I do myself on a regular basis) is that the 3 spoke handle on something like a Waldown drill press is adjustable for position. If you undo the big Bakelite nut, it will slide off and can be moved around. The spline on there is a 10 tooth one, so the spoke handle can be moved around in 36 degree increments. That, combined with lifting the table, seems to get around any isses I have.

Another method that hasn't been mentioned is system used on Bridgeport mills (and clones).
Only one arm and the centre boss slides along the pinion shaft with a detent to hold it in place. Flange on shaft behind the boss with a number of holes drilled in the face. The boss has a pin in the back that mates with the holes in the flange. You pull the handle and boss out till the pin is clear, rotate to the desired position , then push back in until the pin engages. Works well.
