    Default Chuck has a ring

Finally got myself a milling machine.
One of the things that came with it is this sort of indexer. It tilts, has 360 degree markings around the chuck and 90:1 ratio. Unfortunately, there are no markings on the vernier knob. Guess I'll add them one day.
The lever at the top of the photo if lifted allows the chuck to rotate free for quick indexing, when lowered engages the vernier, and locks the chuck if pressed down hard.
Don't know why the guy left that black knob locked in the chuck.

Anyway, Question is : how to open/close the chuck jaws ?

I'm pretty sure that the knurled ring rotates, open and closing the jaws. There should be 2 or 3 holes in the chuck body to accomodate a couple of tommy bars, they should be the same size as what's on the knurled ring. If not, it then only relies on the knurled ring to operate the jaws.
That Black knob, is probably the tommy bar to operate the knurled ring?

That's the tommy bar in the chuck ? , ha ha ha I never thought of that.
There are no holes around the chuck. I thought the ring might rotate but it's locked pretty tight and I didn't want to exert too much pressure on the vernier screw.
The chuck is 110mm. I would probably hold the chuck in a vise between a couple of pieces of wood but I don't have a vise that big. Can you think of another way ?

That looks a lot like a tilting rotary table from a Deckel pantograph or a copy thereof.
I'm pretty sure Kryn is correct and that the chuck is operated by rotating the ring and tightening it with a tommy bar. Google Deckel pantograph or engraver tilting rotary table and I'm sure you'll find more info.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

Just had a look on Google, and Greg you sure know your Rotary Tables, and I saw a price on there, just under $500.00 for one. It's actually fitted with a Burnerd chuck.
I think if you put a bar into one of the holes, with only a small amount of effort, it should move. Quite often people put tommy bars/chuck keys etc in the chucks, so that they don't get misplaced. They are a scroll chuck, most commonly used on wood lathes.

PS as Ralph commented it's probably full of crud. Should you decide to dismantle and clean it, the jaws will only fit in a particular order, if you try to assemble incorrectly, they won't line up properly. DAMHIKT.

Yeah 100% that knurled ring should rotate, I'm sure it's just full of crud in the scroll.

H&F had these years ago, I think I paid $140 for mine on çlearance.
If they came with instructions I'd definitely have them.
It is the ring that adjusts it

That's it Greg ! I found this thanks to your choice of google search wording.
Looks like the lock lever is meant to be used while unscrewing/tightening the chuck.

I turned a pin for a neat fit in those chuck holes (8.9mm) and gave it a few whacks with a small hammer. No good , it seems so tight.
Then I re-watched that video. He is tightening CW. Had to try the other direction and yeah, sure enough it came undone easily, so it's backwards to what you'd think. Also found the jaws to be in the wrong places so I switched them around. Handy too that the jaws are double sided (internal and external).

The milling machine I got hold of is not actually what I wanted but the price was so good I couldn't let it go (and my misses had price as a priority).
It's an Atlas RF-30 round column machine on a very solid stand with a brand new 2HP motor, motorized travel, quill readout and 2 gauge Easson DRO.
Extras included the rotary chuck you've been looking at, drill chuck, swivelling vise, ER32 collet set and chuck, ER16 collet set and chuck, 50mm indexed facing cutter and an el cheapo boring head that fits in the chuck.

He did say the machine has one problem. Apparently the Y nut is loose which is causing backlash. Just have to figure out how to get the table off so I can tighten it.

    Here are my instructions.
Just watched that guy's videos and had me double checking because I thought my jaws where reversable.

Sure enough Fuerda lathe chucks fixed that jaw arrangement with reversable jaws as you can see in the picture.
The sheet metal backplate on mine had no through hole, but that was an easy fix.

Sorry about the multiple posts, Tapatalk now won't let you put up more than 1 photo unless you pay, so I've just found out.

Does your one have the reversable jaws?
Looks the same as mine, just the sticker missing on the chuck.
