There is no way you will get that welded and re machined for $65. Also my experiences with welding annoy castings has been unpleasant to say the least.

    OK next problem.
I tried removing the facing cutter that's in it.
It seems to be stuck pretty hard. Isn't it just a matter of loosening the drawbar nut and giving it a whack with a hammer ?
That didn't work. The guy that sold it to me said he only used it for one task which was milling a face on something so this cutter prob hasn't been removed for years.
I don't know what the drawbar should look like but it's only threaded rod in there now.

Looks like a round column mill drill, so it will be either MT3 or R8, if so you need to give it one good hit with the quill locked and I'd use a piece of aluminum between
to save the threads on the draw bar.
As you said it's probably stuck over the years.

If it's stuck it's because its a Morse taper. You are probably going to need a significant shock to get it out.

I would probably take the drawbar all the way out, then make a close fitting drift and wail on that. The drawbar is probably bending and dissipating all the energy from your hammer blow.

I also made boxes for the rotary table, chucks and faceplates. Everything has lifting points so easy accessed by the crane hook.

    Had to duck into town.
When I came back I used a bigger hammer and out it popped.

Another thing I found...The motor was mounted around 20mm too low so the belt wasn't lined up very good. I don't know why the guy left it like it.
So I lifted it up to where it should be. While fiddling with that is when I discovered the broken pulley. So part of that was of course the belt adjustment.
I reckon it will take me 20 mins every time I want to change speeds on this thing. It's a pain in the royal butt.

I have a vfd for my mill and motors to fit when I get around to it.
I just stay around the 4 speeds that doesn't need belt swapping.

Unlikely to be magnesium - would be too expensive. For that one I would machine off the top flange (leaving a round spigot, machine up a disc from Al with a hole to fit the spigot and then weld it in place. Reprofile to suit.

Any chance of a pic of your motor adjustment please. It may be possible to fit one of several items to make speed changing quicker.
If the motor is mounted on a hinge type arrangement, a push type toggle lever could be fitted. If it's mounted on twin sliding bars, some sort of cam arrangement might be suitable.

Yes I can confirm the height as 32" inches for the cabinet plus 1" deep for the catch tray and another 5.5" inches to the mill table surface. so 37.5" in total.

    Yep, here it is.
I was thinking of a couple of ideas myself, that I could do to it once I get it cleaned up and mounted on the stand. A couple of the free items it came with are lots of thick dirt and a kilo of sharp swarf.
It will need a big clean and lube. X and Y are hard to move and winding the head is near impossible. Once I get the machine freed up I'll seriously consider mounting some sort of motor drive for the head, just need to find a cheap DC motor with a worm drive larger than a windscreen wiper.
