    Default Made some tap boxes

Sorting out my messy tap drawer and decided to make some boxes so I'd be more organised... and figure out what I had that was surplus to requirements.

    First iteration

Sliding lid, three compartments - one for each type.

Later on I made them stackable more easily with some locating pegs and cutouts, and will go back and add that to the other sizes. I also dropped the brand name from the lid as I found I had a bunch of sets that were mixed brands and having the wrong name on the lid would just annoy me. There's also a little ridge inside each compartment which stops the tap from sliding around inside if it's short.

Currently doing yellow for BSW, red for imperial and blue for metric.

I can do up some sets for others if there's interest - I'll end up adding them to the 3D designing/printing website once I have tweaked the design a bit more.

Now that is just immoral, takes the fun out of picking up a handful of taps and spending 10 mins finding the one you want

    J.C.

What about taking the idea further.
Perhaps a drill and tap block.

It has been a gunna -doo for years but if a bloke came along with dedicated tap and drill size block, say M3 to M12.

That would have to be a winner as well.

Good question, I need to look at how much filament is used in any of these.

Are you thinking of one that stands up with holes so that the taps stand vertically or one that is laying down and the taps sit in rounded channels?

Like this? 60-second mockup, M12 is the only one marked so far, cylinders are indicative of how the taps would sit

Taps stand vertically but with the drills fitted in the block the same way.

I am envisaging a block with the tap in one hole and the tapping drill directly in front of it. Say, eight taps and drill side by side.

That way you are never looking for the right tap drill. It is always there in front of the tap ,given one puts the drill and tap back in place , each time.

Would there be a problem with length dimension that that the printer can print?

No, that’d be fine size-wise. I’ll print one up and send it to you for some feedback.

Very NICE, and well thought out.
Personally I like the idea of the box with the three taps, plus the tapping drill along side in the same box.
My reasoning is that I don't want to carry 8+ taps and drills to the drill press, as inevitably I'll drop them and break one or more.
An even niftier idea, would be to have a place for the die to sit in as well.
    Again very NICE,

Thanks. Hrm... putting the drill bit in there really would be handy, it's not like I use my odd-sized drill bits for anything other than tapping threads.

Knocked up a model for the stand idea, will print one tomorrow if the printer is free:

I was thinking a round stand with the taps around the edge like a round drill bit stand would be easier to remove the taps. Not quite as good would be a staggered rectangle like one of my drill bit boxes. My tap sets are in blow molded plastic boxes . I remove the box lids or for those with with taps in the lid and dies in the lower half and they sit open inside large shallow drawers. Opening the drawer and the are all in front of me.

What, only the one!!!! I'd need 18 just for the metrics fine and course, that's just for the basic taps as some go to 4 different pitches, then there's the UNC, UNF, BSW, then there NPP and NPT +++
