need a worm wheel
Hello from BC.
I'm repairing a Kearns model S borer. The tower shaft worm wheel is wallered out. Cranky thing suits a 4 start worm pinion.
3" od X 0.755" wide, 22 tooth, tooth depth 0.255", helix angle 13 deg.
The steel pinion is 2.427" dia, length 1.545", 4 start, 1 turn in length, tooth depth 0.241, included angle 40 deg.
I need the worm wheel in phospher bronze.
The pinion is on the tower shaft and the worm wheel is on the counter shaft.
Any takers.

Sorry about this being a bit of an ammature effort I'm not good at the computer thingy. The high helix angle gives the teeth a s shape and I don't want to make a similar item and wear it in. Any shavings get into the main spindle bearings etc. I was lucky this time. Or was it the Pommie build. Very robust gears and shafts but assembled with taper pins in impossible to extract places.

A throat diameter (TD) would probably be more useful than the OD because the hob diameter will affect the OD at a given TD, but given the amount of wear I suspect it'd be pointless to measure the one you have.
I don't suppose you know, or can measure, the mounting distance between the centres of the worm and wheel shafts? Then we can calculate the size the wheel actually needs to be.

Hi again.
A few of the teeth had a small unworn section on the tip. I would assume non topping. The tooth depth I quoted was with a depth mic across the teeth and to an unworn root section. Close as I can get. There appears to have been a fair bit of running clearance from the factory.

Spoke to one of the older guys at work and he said he's happy help me do the calculations and set up the hobber if you can send me the worm and either get the centre distance (this would be the better option) or send the existing wheel and we'll work it out as best we can.

Hello again Elan.
I sent you a message today but don't know if you got it?
Do you have a differential hobber? You may not have a 4 start hob in I think 8DP. It can be done with a single tooth cutter on a differential machine. I'm no expert but I read up on it when the wheel failed. I have no problem paying transport and costs just want to be sure you have the capacity for this mission.

All our hobbers have differential capability as it's essential for cutting helical gears
