    Default Replacement bench grinder parts

I have an old GMF 8" /200mm bench grinder. It's a 1978 vintage, used to belong to a family member.

I'm missing one of the flange washers for the disc.
Anyone know a good place to source one?

I'm also looking to ID the arbor thread size...
I've measured the shaft OD to 5/8" which is needed for the flange washer. The threads are slightly less than this, and have a metric 1.5 pitch, to the best of my knowledge using my thread gauge set.

    Were these commonly 16mm x 1.5, or a 5/8"-18 tpi more commonly?

I've a stack of the large flanged washers, pretty sure there's a 5/8" one in there.
Will try to remember to look tomorrow.

You shouldn’t use any old washer. The flanges for these grinders are quite large -almost 100 mm in diameter and they have a slightly raised inner rim of the flange to ensure max grip on the wheels. And the pressure points of the flanges must also match on either side of the wheel. For max grip something like thick paper or card can be used in between the wheel and the flange. I’ve found Lino makes for excellent grip and helps prevent the wheel loosening.
I have turned up a number of these flanges as they are quite easy to turn up. Maybe someone near you with a lathe can make one that matches your existing one?

Hi Comander, beware which side of the grinder you need the nut for ! One side is a left hand thread

True 5/8" is 4.9 thousands of an inch smaller than true 16mm. If you have the left and right nuts for the arbor and just need the washer, I doubt that you would have issues aiming for a close 16mm hole, the less than 0.005" variation would not be much of an issue for 5/8".

On the other hand, if you need the nut as well, you need to determine whether you need the LH or RH thread, as well as the diameter and pitch for the nut.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Thanks for the advice, the mythical beast i've been searching the old man's shed for yesterday looks like this:
Overall diameter is 3", 5/8" centre dia.
The flanges are not threaded, there is a nut as a secondary fastening means, via comperssion on the flange. So I do not believe the flanges are LH or RH specific.

I don't own a lathe, so I would be happy to pay for the service of a matching pair, or purchase a pair if someone has an abundance of spares they want to get rid of.
It's a bit of a bugger having lost them, the grinder was my grandfather's, my father had it collecting dust for 25 years before I asked if he was willing to let me give it a good home.

Yep they are the ones I 'm referring to.

I had a spare pair of these but unfortunately I gave them to Anorak Bob earlier this year. Hopefully someone else will have spares.

I have one of approximately that vintage, and the spindle threads are 5/8"-18 TPI NF thread.

Picked up a m16 x 1.5 nut today. Fits perfectly.

Have tasked a local big box tool supplier (definitely not the big green shed, but a red shed) to source some flange washers... They tell me they will enquire about spares through Abbot and Ashby... will see if it's something they follow up on.
Gave them the dimensions of a 3" OD, with a 5/8" ID. I might be skeptical, but the young bloke wrote my query details down on a scrap of paper. I hope I am surprised.
