Mill head adjustment (Tramming)
G'Day All,
I have a ZX-40A Mill which I am slowly getting to grips with. Just been a matter of finding time in between customer jobs. I decided I need to tram it in as I want to be able to surface Motorcycle cylinder heads etc. using a fly cutter. The mill has a tiltable head on the Y axis so getting that square was not a huge issue. Without using a dial indicator I got that to 1.5 thou over 10" using a feeler gauge. The X axis is another matter, I appear to have a difference of 7 thou over 10 inches.
As far as I can see there is no adjustment for the head in the x axis.Tramming Mill copy.jpg
Anyone been down this path and have a solution for me?
Thanks, Alan
PS: If anyone knows how to post these images the right way up that would be good too. My apologies. AlIMG_8016 copy.jpgLast edited by Grahame Collins; 18th Nov 2019 at 09:07 AM. Reason: Photo rotated by Mod

G'day Alan, others with much more experience and knowledge may chime in with a contradictory answer but I get the impression you already have an inkling of the answer which is that without a 'nod' adjustment built into the mill the only way to adjust that angle is by changes to the mounting between the head and the column, dodgy way would be with shims but the proper way would be grinding and scraping. Even if you were to shim the mounting of the head, you may well find that the error is actually in the relationship between the column and base, so that the table falls away from the head as you crank it out from the column.
The good news is that you can get away with what you want to do, by having a flycutter with a diameter that will sweep the surface in one pass, and do the machining in the X axis (left - right) without stepping across in the Y axis (in-out).

Hi Guys,
I added about 2.5 thou in shims under the top pair of column fastening bolts to push the head back about 5 or 6 thou. Aluminium cooking foil works well for this !Best Regards:
Baron J.
