Small Linisher / Sander
Hello all, been looking around for a small linisher / sander similar to the picture that takes a 915 x 50 mm belt
For the price of them its hardly worth making one, in fact it is probably a lot cheaper to buy one than buy the materials. Has anyone comes across a 50mm wide belt machine in their tool searches. Really not concerned if its chinese junk, just want the rollers and motor and Ill modify the rest to make a usable, reliable machine to suit my belt size. The angle grinder powered one looks ok but it seems they all only take a 10mm, 20mm,30mm or the odd few a 40mm wide belt.
I guess if all else fails Ill have make one but I really just want to get on with the project I need it for

If you have a local
CrimeCash Converters close by sometimes you'll find one or something similar. A friend of mine picked up one at a garage sale for $1.00 as the motor was stuffed, he took it apart machined off the armature fitted a pulley to it and has now got another linisher.

I've had a look at a couple of cheap ones also to just get hold of the rollers but I was somewhat disappointed and the term "Reliable" definitely does not spring to mind. The rollers/bearings were noisy and on several the rollers weren't even half let alone fully aligned. Linishing produces a very fine abrasive dust and the bearings and motor looked like they had minimal protection against this. I was not interested in the motors which BTW did not look inspiring. Anyway I would be looking at 3P motor for a bit more grunt and so a VFD / variable speed could be added.

Thats a great suggestion Kryn, we have a few of them around so Ill have a look.
BobL, thanks for your honesty, with further thought on the subject Im thinking of making my own, at least it will have decent bearings, sturdy frame ( unfortunately I tend to over engineer things) and a reasonable size motor.
China, that not a bad looking unit from harbour freight but as you said the freight is the killer on US items
Thanks for your input guys

Are the linishers designed to go with bench grinders too small? The belt size seems to typically be 50mm x 686mm. However if you are just plundering for parts it may not matter, although you may not end up with enough rollers as they have only two. Buy two machines?
Plug "Bench grinder linisher" into Ebay if it is another avenue to investigate.

What is your planned use for it mate? That may play a big part in what type of machine you use.
I use belt linishers every day for work so happy to help out if I can

The linisher is for metal only. I make model engines and a variety of boat fittings amongst other general machining stuff. Really need to clean up machining marks and brighten surface finish and shape curves on steel, stainless and non ferrous metals. Seems zirconia belts are quite rugged and would be good for steelwork and are available in 636 x 50mm size
Thanks to bushmiller & azzrock for their links. The Ryobi might be the solution to my inquiry, will have a look at them this week to assess their suitability and quality.

The same site I linked you too sells belts for linishers in a variety of sizes, and a variety of specific uses. Ceramic belts are the business when it comes to steel.
Keep in mind the smaller motors on the cheaper machines result in only light duty capability.
I’m a full time knife maker, grind steel every day. 1.5-2hp is the minimum for me. If you have plans for larger projects, or prolonged use of your machine then get the machine with the. biggest motor in your price range.
I don’t have experience with the disciplines you’ve mentioned but a linishal bench grinder with the belt attachment in. 3/4hp motor in the absolute bare minimum I’m comfortable recommending, and even they are pretty limiting in application.

I've got the Ozito version of that Ryobi one Azzrock linked to.
Only 240W and it's really only good for light deburring. Anything more and it slows noticeably and motor starts to get hot.
It's still useful and worth what I paid for it, but I wouldn't buy one at RRP.

I am with China,
There's more than a just few members here on the forum who own one of these units. Those who do own them reckon they are pretty good.
Mine is the most used tool in my my workshop.
I would highly recommend it is coupled with a 1 HP plus grinder motor and that the attachment table that brackets to the sanding disc is purchased.
A Multitool will perform all of your tasks with ease, plus sharpen drill bits,HSS, lathe bits, sharpening tools and a huge range of jobs you haven't even thought about yet.
I dare say the Multi Tool fans will now chime in from here.
