Default Belt size(s) or manual for Waldown c-0 tool post grinder

    Hi all,

I have recently acquired a Waldown type C-0 tool post grinder. Anybody know what belts it takes? .. or have a PDF manual?

Also, I'm unsure if there are supposed to be different sized pulleys with it. The motor pulley is a flippable two size jobby so maybe it is intended to be just two speed. Dunno.

    Many thanks,

    Greg.

    Hi Greg,

You can buy the fabric belts from Brobo Waldown: Brobo – Lifetime of Reliability

The C0 I have is fitted with a two step drive pulley on the motor.

The two quills supplied each have a pulley. The hi speed (internal) quill pulley is smaller than the external quill pulley (for obvious reasons).

Email me at [email protected] and I will send you a pdf of the small manual I have.

    Cheers Rob

    Thanks Rob, I've emailed you.

Do you also get your wheels from brobo or are those a fairly common thing out there?

Yes, I am a tpg newb.

    Thanks again.

Stones/wheels are available from abrasive suppliers. Make sure the speed ratings are suitable as speeds can get very high.

You will also need to buy a dressing stone (single point diamond) to prepare the stone face before use. These are quite cheap on Ebay etc.

I mount mine on an extension in the lathe chuck and using the carriage hand wheel manually feed the stone against/across the diamond tip (lathe OFF). This will make a lot of dust so cover everything up when dressing.

You will also find that 70 mm small friction discs (Smith & Arrow) will fit and be very useful for getting into tight corners, cutting off, facing, etc (no need to dress these).

Only apply very light pressure, listen to the speed variation sound to judge that, and always work in both directions to allow for grinding medium wear.

    Cheers Rob

One other VERY important thing I should mention.

When grinding you should not have ANY float in the cross slide as the finish will ultimately depend on the rigidity/position of the grinding medium.

So I strongly suggest you fit a cross slide lock or pinch up one of the gib screws when grinding.

I did a video on a simple lock anyone can fit to pretty much any lathe using just one bolt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et3F1gKYMMM

Bewdy. Thanks for vid link. I thought you might be *that* Rob. 😁 I've been through your pages online for the grinder. Good info there. I also subscribe to your channel. 👍

Re the slide lock, yeah. Been thinking about that. I've not got one but I've a thread stop that attaches to slide dovetails that might just do the trick.

    Thanks again mate.

Evening Greg, you probably have seen the vid https://youtu.be/7QoXMNJueDs which details a strip down of a Waldown TPG. (But Rob’s vid’s remain the best IMO). Enjoy the new toy!

If anyone else would like a copy of the small Waldown "0" manual (it's scanned pages, not a pdf) send me a request through regular email at: [email protected]

Makes it easier for me to respond.

    Cheers Rob

    Greg,

When you have the Waldown up, running and grinding is there any chance that you might post a photo or two of the finish you achieve. I have a Dumore 44 and I'm underwhelmed by the finish it produces.

Rob is correct about covering your lathe when dressing the wheel and when grinding. The grit goes everywhere and there are plenty of nooks and crannies on your SB Ten that would require laborious cleaning if not covered. Cover up the Bridgeport too. I dressed a wheel on the Hercus tool and cutter grinder yesterday and it looked like I had thrown a handful of beach sand over the machine!!

Bob, will do. Might not be for a while though. I've moved into a new place 3 months ago, and despite having a 8mx8m shed to play in, only yesterday did the BP mill head even get turned up the right way out of 'shipping' mode. So, not much metalworking going on at the moment! Life.

Re the dust. Yep. When the new shed/workshop gets settled the surface grinder will be set up so its dust goes towards an open door ....

finally got around to tracking down a belt. Brobo do not supply them anymore.

But, for future reference - the C0 belt is a Daclon 17" x 5/8" belt. It appears the daclon belts are real 'no join' belts they cut from a tube.

The local Daclon crew in Melbourne are https://www.fdoconnor.com.au/ - I spoke with Frank (the owner). He can only do metric now so belt comes in at 425mm - about 6mm less than 17" - but the grinders have some adjustability - so hopefully that will not matter. Belt was $25 + GST.

Next ... track down a supplier of grinding wheels to suit.

You probably already know, but the Myford S7 has two grub screws fitted from new just for this purpose along with the gib adjusting screws. The gibs themselves are secured from the surface by screws that lock them in place after adjusting. It can be a bit of a fiddle when adjusting getting the adjustment right, but once set the only time you adjust them again is for wear. The locking screws bear in the middle of each gib strip.
    Best Regards:

fyi: the 425mm belt I mentioned above fits perfectly. There is more than enough adjustment on the grinder to cater for it.
