Arrow Workholding holding morse taper arbor in a chuck?

I have a number of morse taper arbors without the tang and wish to drill and tape the rear to fit a stop of kind. How does one go about holding say a 3 morse taper in a 3 or 4 jaw chuck?

    Thanks,

Probably the easiest way would be to get hold of a 3MT - 2MT adaptor, as they are normally round and the 2MT tang on top.
I tried to find one on fleabay to show you but the dumbshites show the reducing 3mt-2mt adaptor.

    Hi Guys,

There is one way and that is to use a parallel sleeve with a taper to suit, and hold the sleeve in the chuck, another way is to hold it by any parallel part you can get at by removing any fittings and support the other end with its centre, or even between the centres drilled in the ends. If its a drill chuck on a taper, just grip a suitable piece of bar between the lathe chuck and drill chuck, supporting the other end with the centre.

If you just want to remove the tang, grab the tang in a vise and use a hacksaw ! Note that you may have to grind the end off a parallel sleeve, they are usually quite hard.
    Best Regards:

I've never done it but a mate of mine did his MT2 arbors by turning up a shortish (~30mm long x ~50 mm OD) MT2 socket out of MS that allowed the MT adaptor to protrude the socket by ~10 mm at the wider end.
Then he threaded 2 M6 holes in the socket either side of the wide end or the arbor and made up a 5mm thick round plate the same diameter as the OD of the socket.
The he drilled matching holes in the plate and screwed the plate down so that it pushed the arbor into the socket.

On a similar train of thought to that, make up a Morse socket and split one side. I'd think it would clamp up nicely onto the taper when put in a 3 jaw chuck.

I think I just need to make a collar and turn and internal taper. No need to be full length say about 25mm and then press the MT arbor into the collar and drill. I will try and post some photos. Thanks for the ideas.

My first thought was to make some soft jaws with an angle corresponding to the Morse taper

Anyone that has tried to hold anything even slightly tapered with regular chuck, or used a tapered collet will know they can't hold much if the taper in the wrong taper direction.

The problem with the OPs requirement is he need to work on the smaller MT diameter end - this means the larger MT diameter is at the back of the workpiece and any force applied either sideways or inwards to the taper will ensure the workpiece works its way backwards out of the taper.

The only way to be sure is to somehow lock the taper in place.

Large end in chuck, small end in fixed steady. Because of the taper the steady points might wear slightly but adjust to suit.
