    Default Help identifying indexable inserts

    For $5 I bought a 2ltr ice cream container of inserts at the local Sunday morning car boot sale some used and some appear to be unused I recognise a quite a few but others have me stumped with regard to their intended use perhaps someone in the know could enlighten me, here are pics of some of them .

    There are trapezoidal shaped ones that are flat on the top - one end has what looks as if it is a small piece of different material has been fixed/silver soldered to the insert, it has a mirror finish polish.

    There are others that look to have the same piece of different material fixed to the end - the body is shaped to fit into a parting off/grooving tool holder - the high mirror finish polished cutting tip is radiused

    If they are intended for turning some sort of exotic metal then it probably won't be worth buying a tool holder for them.

    They are almost definitely CBN or cubic boron nitride, used for hard turning extremely hard materials. I'd be interested in purchasing some for sure. I'll send a PM.

    They may also be some kind of ceramic but I have never used those.

    PM me an email address and I can email you the pages from the engineers black book that has all the information on insert identification. I may also be interested in purchasing a few if you are inclined to sell

    The boxes with individual inserts are marked PCD which stands for poly crystalline diamond, if the inserts in the box are true to label they are for high speed turning of aluminum. you should be able to look up the part numbers on the box on iscars website or put them into google.

    I'm just trying to work out inserts myself, but this might help you to identify the shapes;

    1) Some common ones:

    2) A reference:

    Turning Inserts Identification | MITSUBISHI MATERIALS CORPORATION

    e.g.

    CCMT09T304 = 80°, 7° relief angle, , , 9/9.5mm side, 3.97mm base to cutting edge, 0.4mm corner radius

    CNMG120408 = 80°, 0° relief, , 2sided chip breaker, 12/12.7mm side, 4.76mm up, 0.8mm corner
