Making a Cylindrical Square.
I've thought about making a CS for quite a while and recently saw a YT video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofhek3Lbxkc, about making one from a large diesel engine Gudgeon Pin. I need a large one, about 60 to 70 mm diameter and about 100 mm long would be superb but as usual I have no idea where to look. The YT creator said he bought a second hand one but Tungkillo, SA has a limited supply of second hand stuff and all of it seems to be bags of various animal deposits.
Once again, supplier suggestions would be gratefully received. One (now forgotten) didn't reply to my email but they were just car engine rebuilders and wouldn't have had anything big available. I imagine a static engine or an engine for one of those huge Dump Trucks would use around my wanted size?
Thanks,
Charles

If any of you that read the crap I wrote before disregard it. I should read the manuals before I say anything.
Cat did a 62mm pin on their old 399,359 series engines and about the same on their 35## series engines. I thought they were about 130mm long.

I’ll have a poke around the mobile fleet workshops scrap bin for you when I get back to work next week. If I find anything that suits I’ll message.

Thanks for the help Guys. I didn't get out yesterday as my muscular cramps decided to have a field day and driving is not recommended.

I too have been looking for a large gudgeon pin to use as a cylindrical square or even to use in lieu of an angle plate on the mill. I have asked my local Caterpillar dealers and have been told (several times by different people) that they all go back to Caterpillar on an exchange basis. I must say that it seems a bit strange to me, but that was the answer I got from otherwise helpful and obliging staff. If anyone gets a different response, and especially if they score a couple of boxes of large and otherwise suitable gudgeon pins, I would be most interested to hear the details.

I went out yesterday and visited one of the suppliers listed above. They gave me a used pin 2.5" x 4.0" with a 1.0" hole through the centre but made me promise not to reveal from whom I got it. They didn't want to be swamped by similar requests! The one I got is 'glass hard' and will need a bit of work to make it suitable for use. The ends of the pin are out of square to the sides and the 'cylinder' part is worn. I started making a mandrel to support it while machining but test fitting shows the through hole is very uneven internally. One of my just started projects that will be very handy for this is Stefan Gotteswinter's Cylindrical Grinder attachment for a Surface Grinder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VatTwmi0vgY and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ui-ClnUwY4
Does anyone know how much a new Gudgeon Pin of this size would be? It should be more accurate than a used one.

Would some larger (e.g. 60mm) linear shafting be a suitable material to make one from?
I've just had a play with a bit of 60mm round stock and think it would be practical to make a cylindrical square around 250 high with that diameter.

You're right Steve, you could certainly make one with shafting as you say, but whereas shafting may be within a thou or two of being circular, I think that a gudgeon pin from a Caterpillar engine say might be within a tenth of a thou or perhaps even better. It would also be much harder I would think, the only bit I would have concerns with is perhaps the ends may not be ground to the same accuracy, so it may have to be ground or lapped to get it square. That said, shafting carefully turned and polished with emery could be made almost, if not as good, and the lack of hardness would not likely be too much of an issue in the home workshop.

Making a Cylindrical Square.
I just had a look at the linear shafting spec on statewide bearings website.
60mm linear shaft is HRC60-64, and diameter tolerance is +0/-19uM (0.00075")
Not saying all linear shafting is made to those specs, but I'm guessing decent quality ones likely are.

19 microns is a lot of deviation for a cylindrical square.
Also, parallel sides are one aspect but how do you intend to square the end to the required tolerance?
I'm interested because I've been keen to make one too.

A friend of mine gave me a couple of Volvo truck pins a couple of years ago, I haven't got around to grinding them yet but this thread has encouraged me to get them finished. They are 55mm diameter by 110mm long.
Just be aware that any gudgeon pin that you get, new or used, will still need to be ground all over to ensure that the ends are square to the O/D.
