Default New Lathe - Emco super 11 - lots of questions!

    Hey everyone

I have recently purchased an Emco Maximat Super 11 lathe and wanted to start this thread to capture all of the questions I am going to have as I learn about the machine as well as learn how to turn steel. It has been 25 years since I’ve used a metal lathe at school so I am certainly a bit rusty!

There we’re lots of accessories that came in the purchase some of which are in original box (travelling and fixed steadies) and a full set of additional gears as well as change gear to cut imperial threads (it’s a metric lathe).

So quick pic for starters and then the questions will come....

    Default Bearing block

So first question - the pic I posted in the first thread shows the lead screw and power feed disconnected which is due to the bearing block at the tail stock end of the lathe being broken. I believe this is the only part that I need to fix or replace to start using the lathe. I have contacted a couple of overseas sellers of Emco parts to see if they have one (I have the part number etc from the manual and parts diagrams that came with the lathe) but so far o joy in locating one.

Does anyone have suggestion for spare part suppliers that may have one of these? If I can’t get one I am going to either have to fabricate one or get this one fixed. As far as fixing would brazing be the way to go? Maybe the inner hollow part could be filled with some kind of metal epoxy to give extra strength?

I will post other photos showing the broken part tomorrow to help you guys hopefully provide some guidance.

    Default Tool post

Next up is the tool post. I’ve attached a pic and assume this is a quick change tool post with two tool holders and a third holder that I guess is for a parting tool? I assume this is a quality tool post and should be absolutely fine for my hobby use? I am leaning towards buying a diamond tool holder from eccentric engineering as a first up option in my return to metal turning. I assume this will all work fine in this lathe but if I need something special or a particular watch out please let me know.

    G'day DM
That's a nice looking lathe. I think PDW has one (not sure) but should be a good machine when fixed.

Not sure from your photo what that bracket is made from. It almost looks to be aluminium. If it is, brazing won't work. Brazing would work for cast iron, but my concern with it is that it has to be heated to red heat and that might introduce some distortion into it. The bores for the screw and hex bar have to be parallel to each other as well as to the flat base. You would have to remove all the parts from it (oil glands etc) as well which may be tricky. My preferred solution would be to machine a copy from solid (my solution for a lot of things - )
Emco are one of those lower volume high quality lathes, so I don't know if there will be too many out there or distributors able to supply parts.

I think that QCTP is a Parkinson, and they are a known brand. The important part is the post itself, so you may be able to buy cheaper knock off holders that will fit or do as some here have done and make your own.

DM, the QCTP looks like a copy of an Algra, but your photos don't show the top view. I think there is a chart on Hafco's site with the dimensions of the different sizes available. You may be lucky and have the same size as mine and Mag-Pro has cheap holders. But, and I say But, you may be better off changing it to the newer wedge style as the tool holders are way, way cheaper.

WOW, look at that, a decent lathe, not just another bloody boat anchor named hercus.

Check out this F/B link, you may very well be able to buy the spare part direct from the maker.

Thanks mate - I’ve sent Emco a message to see if they supply spares still for my lathe. I think I have also found a second hand one in the US which will be my next best option I believe at this stage.

    Default Bison chuck?

Thanks for the comments around tool holder - more photos later today.

Next question is around chucks. The lathe came with two - a 4 jaw Emco branded one that is in excellent condition and a 3 jaw chuck that is mounted on the lathe and seems to have a bison image in its logo. What can you guys tell me about this brand and quality?

Here are some more tool holder pics - please let me know if other specific angles or measurements would help to identify what it is?

Good luck with trying to get parts for an old Emco direct from the makers, even if it were affordable.
I do like Emco, got a few myself, even if they do use zinc alloy castings which are not the strongest (and never used by Hercus).

Thanks, I found what looks to be a new condition second hand part in the US so I’ve ordered it and hope it is the right thing when it arrives I guess in a couple of weeks.

Bison chucks are Polish made and are decent tools. I bough a 5C collet chuck made by them from Grizzly when I lived just across the border.

You could take it into hard and Forbes and see if there Dickson style holders fit.

    Default Grease points

Next question on the Emco is around lubrication. Firstly it has grease points that I am not familiar with - what are they called and can anyone recommend a nice small suitable grease gun for them please?

Next is way oil - should I be looking for specific oil (The Emco manual recommends Castrol Magna BD 68) and if so where do you purchase relatively small amounts?
