    Default Gibb Strip

Does gibb strips come in standard sizes, or are they all proprietary to each manufacturer/machine?

I have a machine that is missing one and I’m wondering if it can be bought off the shelf and cut to length? Machine is obsolete and not worth anything other than preservation of history & company long gone.

It’s been suggested to use a strip of brass. All gibb strips I have experienced have been ground steel with a trapezoid shape.

This one fits a dovetail so would be trapezoid also.

I have made a few, they are surprisingly complicated things to make more to do with holding the workpiece for machining.

I have never heard of them being a "standard" item. Usually made out of cast iron.

I've only ever seen them made from cast steel. They were not cast iron as you can bend them cold a limited amount for a permanent set. Cast iron can flex cold to a limited degree, but needs heat for a permanent set.

Making one would be easy if you had access to a shaper. I recollect seeing strips of gibb material being sold years ago in various cross section dimensions (all trapezoid). You then have to make it fit.

I don’t have the equipment to make one other than by hand. I’d love a shaper, I guess a mill would do it if you can setup for the correct angle.

Would mild steel work in a home shop scenario not production level usage?

Make one from brass, as it's far easier to file than steel.

If your not going to use it as a production lathe, then a brass gibb will outlast your lifetime.

Brass willll be fine, seen many machines with brass flat gibs.
Usually they are spot drilled to let the gib bolts hold it to save it sliding out.

I have a jig for parallel gibs upto 13" long 1/4" thick and down to 5/16" wide , 60 degree dovetail.

Sorry I'm thinking of flat rectangular gibs I've seen, not tapered ones.
