Maybe I'm not understanding the problem !

That method works well for having a smooth surface under the ball. Not so much if the surface is rough.

Using CAD, two circles from a centre, one touching the outside of the hole and the other touching the outside 180 degrees away will allow you to determine the hole centres.

It seems that the forum software is not playing nice at the moment.
I've re-done the files that I sent to show you what I mean. I'll try again later...

Sorry I've just tried again to upload pictures, but the forum system just in't playing nice !
Looks like the forum is working properly now.

What you describe are basically points described in polar co-ordinate system.

Wrt making sure the axes of the bell housing and adapter are aligned, that's done by making sure the adapter is nicely and accurately flat with even thickness.

I had to make an adapter plate to mount the hydraulic pump to the flywheel of the corolla motor for my log splitter.

I also had a tough time measuring the mounting holes for the bolts and the two locating dowel pins. I ended up doing it mostly by eye and made then slightly oversized.

It's a fair bit simpler than mounting a gearbox though.

Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

    Hi Simon, Guys,

Yes that is exactly what I'm describing. I know that Steve has Qcad and once he has measured the positions of the centre and hole radius and angles, he can draw it up, derive the exact coordinates to enter into the DRO for drilling. Then if you need to make another all the information is to hand.

Yes Simon, I recall the thread that you posted doing that. I remember thinking at the time, that it wasn't an easy task. Nice work though.
