Down-sizing workshop --- and eventually house....
My time has come to reconsider my bucket list of projects and then decide what I'm likely to get around to and what not.
Reason: we are planning to down-size to a smaller property and move 1000 to 3000km further North....
That means I will also need to re-evaluate what machine tools I need in the future for the projects that will remain ion the bucket list. Then I have to consider the implications of moving them with me....
Sooo ....
So far I have decided to move on the Pear 3D Pantograph mill, the Van Norman cylindrical grinder, the Brown & Sharp No2B surface grinder and the Duss-Elbe magnetic Drill. Also going is an old 12" wood planer I have not used in years.
It is likely that my small CVA lathe and either the Servian or the Arboga drill and the Cash horizontal mill may join them....
This is not an ad yet - but an early invitation for expressions of interest and request for sales advice.
Whatever I end up doing, I will advertise them here first, of course.Cheers, Joe

Sorry to hear that you're moving up north, at least the weather will be a bit warmer.
Hope everything goes well for you.

That's interesting Joe, are you considering moving to the coast? My tool maker B in L might have some interest but we have just bought a new surface grinder so that is out. I don't come here a lot so could you do me and perhaps others a favour and put a link into this thread when you post the for sale so I get an email notification. Thanks.

Hi Joe,
It saddens me that you are moving away. I know you are doing what is best for you, Pam and your family but the news has taken me by surprise. If you do decide to move and sell up, whoever decides to buy your home will be purchasing an absolutely amazing place.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

So Joe - where are you thinking of moving to?
Funnily enough there's lots of cheap real estate in Broken Hill and you would probably never need a lawn mower.

Exactly WHERE we are going isn't clear yet. We have looked at and are following real estate markets in Jervis Bay area, Ballina area and Sunshine coast area....
But it is complicated: my daughter, her husband and our grandchildren are also planning to move. That's what prompted our decision.... while we are flexible (as long as it's somewhere warmer in winter), they need to find employment there first.... and my daughter's choices will be the most difficult....
Our planning time frame is around two years. So no firesale is likely....Cheers, Joe

Both my boys live at Caloundra on the Sunshine coast. We went up to visit them about 2 months ago. What a rat race. Lots of people there. Lots of new housing subdivisions with small lots so the houses are all crowded together. One of my sons place is on a 350M lot. If you were fit and had some grippy footwear you could travel the length of the street via the rooftops. Most places the gutters are about a metre apart.
They took us to one of the beaches late one arvo. It was just before dark, on a week night. There's a walkway that follows the beache/s for some distance. The place was packed. Had trouble getting a park for the car then the walkway was also packed.
To para phrase a Dire Straits song "two lanes of traffic, both lanes moving slow"
Inland from the coast would be a lot better to escape the crowds but then it would be a lot hotter and humid in summer.

Victorias loss QLD wins Joe its the best movne we ever made 3 1/2 yrs ago.
Watch that temptation of coastal life, full of pitfalls, cyclones, rain, salt air all leading to rust!
Sunshime coast is glorious for holidays.
Bottleneck to get back down to Brisbane. Far away from quality engineer supplies.
There is employment everywhere depending on qualificatoons.

Just came across this thread after a long time.
So just an update: we changed our mind about moving far away. We bought a 1/4acre block in Bendigo and are building a new house and shed.
The workshop downsizing is almost complete and starting to show some floor space.... The house is going on the market in a couple of weeks and Ill have to put everything left in a container I bought. I'll start a new thread when the shed build startsCheers, Joe

1/4 acres - LUXURY -
Good luck with the move and chucking stuff out.
I'm watching SWMBO wrestling with the van loads of stuff we bought back from deceased MILs place in 2019. It occasionally gets moved from room to room to room and slowly some of it gets put in the hall way which means I have to deal with or dispose of it. Yesterday she managed to select 4 of about 50 picture fames that she wanted hung up. The others she's still deciding on. I'm fairly sympathetic as I would be the same if I had to deal with stuff from my family.

I live in SEQLD. We have humidity and two years ago hail that was over 10cm in diameter. We also have a tile roof. In case you are curious the 10cm hail wins over the tile roof.
I don't really want to live the rest of my life here. But then I have family here, I know people and I know my local area. A move anywhere else will have its own challenges. The grass may not be greener somewhere else. In fact I can almost guarantee that at the moment, especially with the amount of rain we have had.
As I don't know where else I want to be I am concentrating on deciding what I want. It may be a lot less of some things and a bit more of other things. It is being rational about what I want in my shed, maybe a small tool grinder. It is deciding what is the best sized lathe that will suit my future needs. How many projects do I really need to last me until I am 186. I only chose that number because I need to reduce the projects to a more realistic 86 years old, or maybe less. Am I really going to use that camping gear that I last used in 1998. The list goes on.
In short it puts me in the best position to stay and will help if I decide to leave. The more you have the more you have to manage.

1/4 Ac Id feel claustrophobic on that
I think our beagle Sir Carlos Sniffalot would too, his yard is a little bigger than that.
Congrats on getting a new place, hope it all pans out well for you....................................................................
