Hi Rusty, Thanks for the picture.
Obviously mine is much earlier than yours. Looking at the picture of the spindle on yours mine doesn’t stick out as much. Certainly much better than sticking a bit of rod in to stop the spindle turning whilst removing tools from the taper.

This is mine. The bottom of the spindle isn't very clear and that collet chuck is the one that was supplied with the machine. I've removed the cover over the motor so I can keep an eye on it. I've also fitted a fan in the back of the cover to blow air over the motor. The little fan blades on the armature don't really shift much air at all.Best Regards:
Baron J.

Yep, I think Optimum have revised their designs over the years.
Apart from getting some proper tooling and a vice sorted out, my next major step is adding a DRO. Optimum do a wonderfully simple magnetic DRO setup where you attach adhesive-backed magnetic strip to each axis and install corresponding readers, then hook it up to their DRO unit. However I'm kind of committed to doing a TouchDRO setup which uses an Android tablet for the DRO display, and requires conventional glass scales.
In the meantime, I am learning how to zero the crank dials and count my rotations, something I bypassed with my lathe that arrived equipped with a DRO.
