Default McMaster-Carr Reusable Peel-Away Coating for Metal, Transparent Yellow

    G'day Gents,

I am wanting to purchase the dipping compound used to protect freshly sharpened cutting tools. It is often found on re-sharpened tools as well as new and is perfect for where tooling is to be stored for indeterminate periods of time as it prevents contact damage to cutting edges, rust, is easily removable and is recyclable - as in able to be thrown back in the heating pot and re-used.

McMaster-Carr (USA) have such a product but do not send to Australia McMaster-Carr, (https://www.mcmaster.com/7762t72-7762T45).

Does anyone know if the same or similar product is available from any supplier in Australia?

    Thanks in advance

    Quentin

    Hi Quentin,
Bunnings sell, or used to a product called Plasti Dip in various colours, I have a rattle can of it in clear and it lays down a layer about 0.5mm per pass.

Re-useable I doubt it but may meet your requirements. Alan.

Plasti-dip is a permanent coating, used for tool handles etc. Probably not what Quentin wants.

Go swipe the hot wax your missus uses to remove that ugly mustache, just dip whatever you want to protect in the hot wax and it's even re-usable too.

A lot of the plasti dip paints are removable, you just peel them off. They are often sold at auto stores and mainly used to paint wheels for a custom look.
This is not the same as the permanent plastic powder coat which is baked onto the object.

You could probably use liquid electrical tape, but it's not going to be re-usable. Another thought is a length of heatshrink placed over the cutting end of the tool and shrunk on, but the same thing though it's not re-usable.

    Hi Quentin.

Try this mob in the UK. the blocks for 4 pounds odd seem to be reusable, postage shouldn't be too much.

I looked at the SDS on the Mcmaster site, which gave a maker's name, then asked about an Australian distributor. This is the response I got.
    Hello,

We don't have a distributor in Australia. You can buy direct from us. See attached price list.

So direct sales are possible. I won't attach the price list but will forward it on if there is interest. They also list heater pots too.

Plasti dip can be pealed off easily if the coatings are thick enough.

    melted bees wax works.
