Default Need the use of a toe jack

In the next few weeks I want to lift my lathe up around 100mm and a toe jack would probably simplify matters a little. The lathe is 1.5t, so I'm going to need something.
Before I make or hire something, has anyone in the Adelaide area got one they would not mind lending for a week or two?

I've got a couple you can borrow but I live the other side of Birdwood! The Bottle Jacks are rated 3 Ton and they handled my 2.5 ton Surface Grinder OK.

Michael, have you considered doing one end at a time using a pair of scissor jacks. I recently jacked one up like that to get a pallet under it to move the lathe out with a pallet jack and reversed the order at it's new location. Used heaps of solid wood of various thickness as safety chocks.

I got four of them though is a bit far away to help.

What yer can do is put a steel bar 'through' the lathe (some even have a convenient hole through for just that purpose) and put a normal bottle jack at either end of the bar and lift the lathe that way.

I've got maybe 8mm of clearance between the bottom of the stand and the floor at the moment. I could lever it up bit by bit with a pry bar and blocks - that was the original plan. However, that is going to be slow and labourious. A toe jack, although not essential, would speed things up a bit. Even when using that I would be blocking as I went up just for safety.

I don't have room for a scissor jack or even my screw bottle jack, so a toe jack was the next thing I thought of. I could make one as Joe Hovel did, but that seems a waste if someone local has one. As well, by the time I've got it made, I probably could have done the job with the pry bar.

This is it here (things were a lot cleaner back then)

Looking at the photo. That hole at the right-hand top side of the base casting, and the hole above the red badge on the base casting - do they go right through the machine ?

Yes. They are the official lifting points. The lathe was positioned using them when it first arrived. To hire a gantry to lift it is over $250 (plus delivery), so I am exploring options to do lift it without that. Hiring a gantry is the fall back position but as the lift is a just a vertical of 100mm, it seems a bit involved for what is planned.

If you only want to lift the machine and not move it then a bar (from your mill stock) through one of those holes and bottle jacks at either end (i.e. either side of the lathe) of the bar should suffice. Use blocks of wood or similar to give the jacks sufficient height.

Those holes are around 600mm from the floor, so I would either need a very long bottle jack or a large stack of timber/ bricks. That bit of the lathe is around 1000kg, so i don't really want to take chances.

I think I have a solution though. Between Bob and Eric, I have a way forward with backup plan.

Sound thinking. If in doubt - Don't.

Being on a farm where block spacers are 5 minutes of chain saw time I tend to forget its just not as easy for them city people.
