Thread: Ebay "Precision Granite Square"

I've have a 24" cylindrical master you are welcome to use. I don't know specifically what grade it is but came from the Carr Gear company calibration room.
I remember Phil (machtool) had an indicator setup for checking squareness, you could give him a yell, I'm sure he would be happy to check it for you.

Thanks for the offer of your cylindrical square.

I emailed Phil (machtool) about a year ago requesting some help. I had always enjoyed a good report with Phil but he wasn't interested in helping me. Said he doesn't do that anymore. Not sure what sort of went down on this forum between Phil and either some members or the forum itself but I got the feeling that Phil had a bad experience.

I have nothing but respect for Phil.

The mods decided they did not want Phil (not PC brigade friendly) here. Massive loss to this forum and members. He was by far the most knowledgeable person in this neck of the woods. I don’t blame him for shrugging his shoulders at the request for assistance from a forum member. He was always the first to step up and offer help until the mods had enough of moderating.

Phil got a lifetime ban for having the effrontery to disagree with the moderator. Result, we no longer have the most accessibly knowledgeable person in Australia available to help out. Way to go.

Yes, Phil could be quite rude & abrasive. That was manageable by a moderator who understood value and what a moderator's role was. You need a skin that doesn't have its thickness measured in microns though.

Funny thing, I still get help from Phil, we take turns buying lunch and swap details of what's happening in the world. He's a great and immensely helpful man, as many on this forum who benefited from his generosity could attest. He & I had our run-ins both here and other places but the thing is, neither of us are thin skinned or vindictive.

I took a decision to post a *lot* less after that little contretemps. When the predictable moderator reaction occurs (wait and see this post & variant22's disappear and/or aggressive response & back-channel PM's threatening bans) expect me to post even less, or do the Cheshire cat thing from Alice. So if any of you want to talk with me, better use my email address, and soon.

That's one way to look at it.

Well the square arrived today. It came intact and in a "box", well a box of sorts. For the price I can't really complain. It's in one piece and at least looks like a square so it's already exceeded my expectations!

It also came with the usual mass produced certificates although this one appears to be almost all in Chinese. It has a couple of illustrations and some figures. I'm guessing one set of figures is in reference to the flatness of the longer reference surface and the other is maybe the divination from squareness at different points?

Not sure. Anyone any clues?

I'd say the top line of numbers goes with the top diagram showing deviation from flatness and the second line/diagram is deviation from square.

Hi Elan,

I would tend to agree with you. Couple of things that I don't understand;

If the first is flatness, then it only relates to one of the two reference surfaces. I would have thought that a granite square has two reference surfaces, not one.
Also, the graph only shows 4 points yet there are five numbers.

The other thing to note is if the deviation from squareness is in fact 4.75um, is that over 100mm, 200mm or 250mm?

Yea I know I'm probably asking too much for the money I spent....

Edit: I think the squareness figure of 4.75um may be over 160mm. If you look at the top of the page in the column next to where it states 0.005mm it states 160mm.

I note that a couple of other members bought one of these squares as well. I would encourage you guys to post a copy of the certificate that came with yours so we can compare.

DIN 875 sets Grade 00 at 4um over 150mm, so it's 0.266um out of tolerance, but I suppose we'll allow it
