Default Help identifying type of collet.

I came into a bunch of collets today. Round, Hex and Square. I am looking for a collet chuck to suit but I have no idea what designation these collets are. Can anyone help? Overall length is 3.785" diameter at widest is 1.6" and at the other end 1.125"

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Eric,

They look similar to the ones that used to be used on a capstan lathe, where the collet was held closed by a rotating cone and a lever was used to operate it. But from memory the tool holder on the capstan was only 1" inch bore.

    Hi Eric,
I'm pretty sure that your collets are for a Ward Turret Lathe. They go in the headstock, where a lever is used to loosen the collet, the bar is advanced by weighted pulleys, the collet tightened and material turned, parted off and the process repeated.

Sort of a Manual CNC machine.
BJ, the collets don't go in the tool turret head.

    Hi Kryn,

Thanks for your post, yes it was a Ward 5A that I remember, but that was over 50 years ago. There was a handle maybe a foot long that was pulled and pushed to rotate a collar. I recall been intrigued by the mechanism.

I had 3 Wards about 20 years ago. Picked up another one recently for $200.00 no tooling though. Should be easy enough to make the holders.
