Thread: Brown & Sharpe adjustable knurl holder

Hi all,

Was looking for knurling tools the other day and ended up looking at one of Mr. Pete's (tubal cain) videos on knurling. He showed a really nice knurl holder by b&s which is different to all the others I have seen.

The knurl wheels can be rotated to any angle to produce a straight, diamond or other patterns. The stock feeds through the guts of the holder and so you can knurl very long lengths unsupported. Seems like a great design.

Does anyone own one of these? Seem a couple on eBay in the US for over $300 although the average price seems around the US$100 mark.

I can't quite work out the exact internals design and so can't work out if it's possible to make a similar design at home.

Anyone have one of these and can tell me how intricate the adjusters are and if it's a good project to build? Or better still post a pic of it disassembled?

From the link that Steve provided it looks like it is the sort of thing used on a capstan lathe, where the knurl is set specifically for the size material being knurled - not much good for a general purpose workshop, where a knurl diameter is never the same twice.
I use an Aloris knurling tool - Quick Change Tool » Aloris Axa-19 Quick Change Adjustable Knurling Tool Holder and that does a reasonable job. The photo shows a 3 ball handle but mine is just a knob with some C spanner holes in it. Should not be all that hard to make up a version of that.

Hi Guys,

Michael is spot on ! That tool is intended for use in a capstan turret lathe.

There is a threaded pusher that forces the knurl onto the work and is prevented from rotating by a woodruff key.
The key is fitted upside down to how it would be in a shaft with the curved part locked by a split clamp pin. If you have seen my version of the Norman patent tool holder, it is exactly the same idea.

It is very much an adjust for one particular size rather than being continually adjustable.

Hey Michael, that knurling tool looks bloody good.

What's the procedure for self centering it?
Do you leave it loose in the tool holder when tightening up the knurl so it free to slide and find it's centre?

You adjust the height for the tool holder as per normal and then when in use, you turn the knob and both wheels come in. Never thought about it much more than that.
