6X4 Bandsaw acquisition.
Hi Guys,
I've just acquired an unloved 6X4 band saw from one of the engineering places that I frequent ! I was told that its been in a storeroom for several years and that it needed some attention. For what I've paid for it that isn't a problem. I've spent the last few days stripping it down to refurbish it.
These pictures are of one of the problems that I've found.

It appears that the saw has been knocked over at some point in its life and the left hand hinge bracket has been broken. Someone has tried to do a repair by making a steel cover and screwing it into the casting.
The mains lead has had the plug cut off so I suspected that the motor was dead. On testing I've discovered that the motor has been replaced ! Probably the original one was damaged when the machine hinge was broken. Anyway the replacement motor is a 1HP genuine Brooks, made in Huddersfield, motor and it runs just fine.
I think that the reason the plug was cut off was because there was no earth to the frame and the push button on/off switch was full of swarf, making the frame live. Other than the rubbish tin stand everything else seems to be in good condition.Best Regards:

Good find BJ.
In Oz plugs are regularly cut off used machines. This supposedly removes the sellers onus of electrical safety and transfers it to the buyer. In our area, electrical gear placed on the verge for annual council pick up is supposed to have its plug cut off. A nuisance for me as I collect cords for electrical projects although I still find enough to just keep me going.

A good find. Just a thought, is the part thick enough for it to be brazed up and an infill piece brazed into the backside of it to give it strength ?.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions
I did originally think about making a new one out of steel, then stopped thinking about it.
In the old days I did a lot of furnace welding of cast iron ! Somewhere I have the certificate that I earned for learning how to do that. Mainly marine engine blocks that had cracks in them. Then stitching took over, becoming the norm.
Very hot uncomfortable and heavy work, also very time consuming. A big block could take two or three weeks. No wonder they were teaching the young'uns to do it.
Anyway back to the bracket, I'll have a new one tomorrow ! £8.00p from the local MM. It seems that they stock all the parts for this machine, including the whitworth bolts used in a few places. I find it odd that all the grub screws are imperial 1/4" Whit ones.Best Regards:

Nice pickup on the b.s. Wow you managed to get a new part that's great.
Nice work!

Hi BJ,
Also find it strange that that BSW would be used as Far East machines from that era, tended to use Unified threads as their intended export market was the US, or maybe the manufacturer got a good deal at the time on Whitworth bulk buy. Alan.

6X4 Modifications.
Hi Guys,
While I have the bandsaw in bits, I thought that I would make some modifications to it.
04-08-2019x005.jpg
One of the issues that I've experienced using these 6X4's is that if you want to cut off a thin section from the short end of a bar there is no support for the workpiece. You can see in this picture where the blade lands.
I've decided to put a piece of steel bar in there to provide support, unfortunately the sides of that slot are tapered and its sides are not even parallel to each other.
04-08-2019x004.jpg
So I set it up on the mill and using a 16 mm four flute end mill at about 400 rpm, machined the full depth of the sides of the slot square in 1 mm cuts. The long piece of M8 threaded bar was passed up through the curved slot and a plate and nut used to hold the base casting down. Then I squared it up and used two more hold downs on the far side clamped onto the ridge running down the length of the casting. I took 2.5 mm off each side to get it vertical and parallel.
The slot is now 22.5 mm wide and I have a nice piece of key steel that will fit in there nicely. I'm going to fit a retaining plate underneath with a couple of screws to secure the steel block.Best Regards:

Hi Guys,
Whilst I was out this morning I took a wander round B&Q. They have an discontinued odds and ends box in the trade only section. Well as you guys know, I'm not adverse to having a rummage around in various places !

I couldn't walk away and leave these beauties now could I.
£10.00p for all four, their mine now. 75 mm diameter 21 mm wide, two with brakes and two without. My bandsaw will be getting a new standBest Regards:

Nothing more satisfying than stumbling onto a bargain that you have an instant use for!
Good work!

New Parts !
Hi Guys,
Almost forgot to post pictures of the new parts that I bought for the bandsaw. I say parts, because I discovered that one of the pulleys was cracked, confirming my thoughts that the bandsaw had been knocked over at some time in its life, so I bought a new one.
06-08-2019-005.JPG 06-08-2019-006.JPG 06-08-2019-007.jpg
The original pulley was cast aluminium, this one is cast Iron. Surprise surprise it comes with a 1/4" Whit Allen grub screw. Its a very tight fit on the shaft, I think because of the paint on it. A problem easily solved.
06-08-2019-004.jpg 06-08-2019-003.jpg 06-08-2019-001.jpg
This is the new pivot bracket, a really nice stove enamelled blue colour. I don't know whether you can see down the grub screw hole but there isn't one in there its full of really hard paint ! Guess what though, the hole is threaded M6 Again not a problem, I've plenty of M6 hex grub screws. A bigger problem is that the shaft wont fit ! The hole is at least 1/2 mm smaller, I doubt that the paint thickness would account for that.
Now to finish the drawing for the new stand !Best Regards:

Hi Russ,
Yes the difference between 5/8" inch and 16 mm ! Nothing that a drill won't fix
Actually whilst sorting this out I have discovered that the hinge pin is bent. More proof that this machine has taken a tumble. I am wondering what else I might find that's damaged !Best Regards:

One of the mods I made to mine was judicious application of an angle grinder to the hinge "stop" so now it is almost vertical when raised. It originally elevated to about 70 degrees. As soon as I make a table I'll have a poor man's vertical saw as well.
