Tool post bolt turner - name?
Hi folks,
My new lathe came without a square socket wrench to turn the bolts on the tool post. Not a big issue as I can always use a normal wrench, but if I can get a replacement cheap then it'd be convenient.
However, for the life of me I can't find any for sale on line - I'm wondering if there's a name for a 10mm square socket t handle wrench I don't know - any ideas?
Cheers,
Danny

Hi Danny,
I replaced all mine with M6 hex cap screws, though I still have and use mine, simply because it fits the top of the draw bar on my mill. Its short 100 mm long handle is Ideal for nipping up the MT3 taper without it becoming too tight to remove without excessive force.Best Regards:

Hi Danny,
I owe you an apology !

It seems that mine is 8 mm square and not 10 as I mentioned.
Its stamped Britool with the number "Z1050" on the shank.
Sorry about that.Best Regards:

Shame it's not 3/8" then you could weld a T piece to an old 3/8" drive socket.

I think that it is probably close enough. 3/8" is a touch over 9.5 mm, and I would be amazed if a 3/8 drive socket did not fit the heads of the bolts. It would be pretty simple to weld up a T bar to suit or even use a T handled allen key with a 3/8 drive socket fitted to it to use as a wrench.

I made one once. The method would be to get a piece of something like 20x5 flat bar, partially cut it at 10mm intervals 3 times plus once all the way through. bend along the cuts and wrap around a bit of 10mm stock (say some key steel). Weld along the corners (starting with the complete cut) to make up a hollow square section. Downhill run from there - drill one end for a round rod, weld that in and then put in the lathe to round/ clean up the outside of the socket section. Add the handle of your choice etc.
It won't be hardened but it probably does not need to be and making a replacement if it gets flogged out is as simple as making the original.

I was thinking I could build one by just attaching some plate to all four sides of a 10mm square bar. The lathe is literally the only piece of metalworking gear I own (I'm a woodworker just starting to dip my toe into metalwork), so would probably drill and bolt the sides.
Will depend on whether I get lazy and buy a replacement before I find time to buy the appropriate materials!
Cheers,
Danny

Hi Danny, Guys,
Thinking about it, a simple filing job ! Drill a hole in a suitable length of say, 6 mm thick flat bar and file the corners square. Very much an apprentice training job ! I do like the idea of pressing a cheap socket into service though.Best Regards:

Poke around for a 4 point or 8 point socket. Not very common and new would cost more than the wrench you found, however a used one would leave you with a pulse.

Hi Guys,
I don't know what your scrap yards are like, but in my local one things like old sockets and sets of them are like confetti. I picked up a 70 mm one with a 1" square drive once. A lucky find for me because it fit the oil filter nut on the Ford Van that I had at the time.Best Regards:
