Default What oil for enerpac hydraulic pumps?

    Hi all,

Looking for an alternative to the Enerpac oil that is recommended to be used in there pumps. Currently looking into an hydraulic oil for a hand pump but wouldn't mind knowing a substitute for the air/hydralic and electric pumps as well for future use.

I am considering Castrol Hyspin but not quite sure about the required ISO rating.

Just regular old iso68 hydraulic fluid is fine, basically any detergent free oil will do the job.

The place that rebuilds our pumps uses ATF.

I have a drum of Shell Tellus ISO 68 so it would work out well if I could use that

I heard ATF is no good for the seals?

Make sure that you get any substitute right, a place I worked at for many years had to overhaul cylinders when someone substituted some other oil, after that they made sure the plenty of Enerpac oil on hand to avoid a repetition. That was a mine site with a good selection of oils to choose from, but the choice made was not good for seals. Not to say that there wouldn't be suitable oils of a generic type that would be every bit as good as the Enerpac stuff, but best check with someone who really knows, and not someone who thinks he may have an idea. An oil company should be able to advise you of suitability of their oils for the job.

It is just possible that the company doing the rebuilding uses seals which are good for ATF, whereas original equipment seals may indeed be unsuitable for ATF. If you know for sure that your pumps and cylinders all have OEM seals and O rings, you could check with Shell to see if Tellus 68 would be ok. A wrong substitution will cost you so it's worth getting the good oil so to speak.

Any ISO 32 or 68 oil will do the job.

If the oil is to be used in a pump that runs a lot and the oil gets hot then 68 would be a better chose. For hand pumps 32 is more that adequate.

Never ever (and I mean EVER) use ATF in any hydraulic system unless recommended by the manufacture. It can lead to early seal failure.
In 10 years of servicing hydraulic equipment there were very few that would recommend ATF and enerpac was not one of them.

If I use the 68 in a hand pump will it cause any damage?

It being a heavier oil will there be a big difference in the speed that the cylinder advances and retracts?

    No damage at all.
Unless your well into sub-zero temps you should not notice any difference in speed.

Thanks, that is what I wanted to hear. Will just use the ISO 68 that I have available. It needs to be at least 10 degrees before I start working I think, so using it in cold temps should never be an issue
