Default Bench grinder Soft Abrasive Wheels

I’m looking to replace my wheel as it’s worn past the useable area on my 8” grinder. I may try it on a 6” to see if I can get a bit more out of it.

This one is a 7P. 180 grit. They come in hardness rating from 5P upto 12P. And all through the usual grits as well.

As you can see this one was $12. I think I may have been gifted it so I don’t know where it came from. Looking online the prices seem to start at around double that and go up with hardness and grit.

Does anyone have a good supplier?

    Hi Dale,

I would put it on the smaller grinder, true it up and use it.

I've put even more worn ones on a mandrel and used them in the drill press and in the lathe chuck. I've one kicking about that is only about 3.5" inches diameter that I've used in an electric drill.

Still need to find a replacement at some point though.

Aliexpress looks like it may have some options.

These are nylon fibre abrasive wheels.

They are for deburring, blending and polishing not grinding.

I use them to clean rust and when I want a better finish than a wire wheel on my forged items for the market.

    Dale

I think this is a product that is quite expensive on the domestic market, but is significantly cheaper from the likes of China, Hong Kong etc. I have been quoted $30+ for 200mm wheels but a similar product (not necessarily exactly the same) is half that price from the Asian market. The cost does increase with hardness.

I use Scotchbrite wheels for that sort of thing.

They are not cheap but I find these multiple layer mops are better at removing rust from odd shaped objects and various crevices etc.

Flex-Pro discs from Tool King Dale. I've been using them for years and they are fantastic. Tool King have them in 80, 240 and 600 grit. I also have a 180 grit one but I can't find it on the website.

Google Scotch-Brite silicone carbide wheels. About 10 times dearer than the one you're replacing though.

I bought some ones like this (of different grits) a few years ago and really like them:

Mine were not these exact ones, but same thing really.

Thanks for the link, I purchased one of these for my spare 8 inch bench grinder but somehow I ended up with a 10 inch wheel (my fault). I reduced it's O/D by marking a line around each side and hacking away from each side with a thin cutting disc on a 5" angle grinder. I then dressed it back using a single point diamond to get it running nice and true. It finished up at approximately 8.5" which will give it more time in service.

Yes that’s the type. I see you can get different grits as well as hardness ratings for those grits.
