iron filings & sal ammoniac : pseudo welding
Reading an old book today, it briefly mentioned a technique using sal ammoniac and iron filings to "weld" two pieces of metal together.
Did some googling, didn't find anything terribly convincing - got the impression it is an old blacksmith's trick. Started turning up various recipes in my searches.
Anybody here ever actually done this ?

Could be something borrowed from the Japanese Samurai sword makers. A flux used when beating two steel parts together. Damascus Steel making techniques.
